A work readiness day was held on Thursday, March 16 for year 11 students participating in vocational education courses at Yass High School.

Rod Saville (VET coordinator) and Carissa Mills (workplace learning officer at Southern Region Business Enterprise Council) and VET trainers assisted students on their employment-related skills to become work ready before they complete their mandatory 35 hours work placement next term.
Ms Mills visited classes to work with students on their choices and assisted with approaching local employers to organise placements.
The students – in hospitality, construction, metals and engineering, primary industries and IT – were also shown the requirements and responsibilities for work placement and they signed up online to request work placement.
Our students have a strong reputation for their employability in the local community and beyond, with experienced trainers and strong community support giving them a headstart over other school leavers.

Workplace health and safety training was also involved, including NSW White Card for construction students.
Mr Saville said Yass High School was proud of the contribution made by local employers to train the employees of the future and takes the preparation of students seriously.
“Our students have a strong reputation for their employability in the local community and beyond, with experienced trainers and strong community support giving them a headstart over other school leavers,” Mr Saville said.
With the opening of the new Yass High School Community Trade Skills Centre in 2016, all students have industry-standard facilities in which to complete their certificate courses and prepare for industry.
