Newly elected president David O’Brien, who served as vice president of the YVSC in 2012–17, says there is a need to grow the sports council for the future.
“Sports council now has the opportunity to reinvent itself. That’s the challenge the new sports council executive accepts,” he said.
O’Brien also points to the commitment of engaging with other sporting clubs within the villages and abroad to give them voices.
“Opportunities are there through our visions and shared experiences and we need to start shaping our future,” he said.
Of the key issues to address, O’Brien said the team needs to determine the specific goals of the new council and to develop a term of reference to address the following issues:
- Lack of funding
- Lack of represented sporting bodies
- Sporting infrastructure improvements
- Multiple tenants working together
- A framework that is open to suggestions
At the AGM, the vice-presidency role was divided into a shared one among YVSC members David Ault and Ian Kemp.
Along with Kemp, O’Brien and Melinda Cooke (YVSC secretary) will develop a draft document for distribution to relevant sporting bodies in the region.
The council may also develop sub-committees to liaise with other groups such as the Murrumbateman Recreation Ground committee and village groups to better serve the sporting community.
Meanwhile, rejoining the council is Bronson Sainsbury from the Yass Rams Rugby Club, who said the club wants to be represented after not having done so for a few years.
New on the council is Scott Eulenstein from the Hume Tennis Club. Other council members include Andrew Southwell (Yass Football Club), Peter Timmer (Yass Junior League Club), Kim Williams (Murrumbateman Tennis Club) and David Kemp (Yass Netball Association).
The next YVSC meeting will be on May 22 at 6pm.
