The nationwide initiative by Bicycle Network, supported through the NSW Government, promotes and encourages physical activity in young people.
One by one, the students cycled, walked or scooted with parents and care takers to the main street building, welcomed by Mrs Arabin, Ms King and Mrs Innes. The students continued on under supervision to the school, where on arrival they enjoyed a whole-school morning tea of fruit and Milo.
Later that day, policewomen from Yass Police Station spoke to students about road side safety, stranger danger and the cool and interesting equipment they were wearing.
Following an interactive and interesting chat, the Binalong Public SRC president, Tom Ings, invited the police to the oval where (with the help of Ryan and Jaiden Ings) a bike track was created for the students to follow.
Tom created a ‘bike check area’, where the police checked the students’ helmets, brakes and general wear and tear of the vehicles they were riding.
“The bike track is designed to help students understand safety when going down hills, up hills and what to do when riding in a big group,” Tom said.
“Overall, I think it was a good day. The students have a better understanding of road safety, and had fun riding their bikes or scooters to school.”
On completion of the bike course, the friendly police judged the ‘decorate my bike’ competition.
With home-made streamers, cellophane and an orange wig, Georgie Ings won the primary section. With orange spraypainted hair, streamers for a cool pony tail and orange streamers on his scooter, Jaiden Ings won the infants.
All participants were congratulated with blue cards (whole school positive behaviour program) by the friendly Yass police officers.
Binalong Public thanked the police officers and waved as they departed in their shiny and colourful police car. “Seeing the police car leave was a great way to end,” said student Abbey Paterson.
“It was a great day and I enjoyed the police people,” said Kindergarten student Tyson.
