“Providing a range of ways for people to participate in physical activity and sport was one of the key strategies identified in our Regional Community Strategic Plan and these fitness stations will be a fantastic asset to the community,” mayor Rowena Abbey said. “This opening will be a lot of fun and who knows I may even pull out my active wear to participate!”
The aim of the free community fitness class around the fitness circuit at Riverbank Park is to get the community actively involved.
“We didn’t want a simple ribbon cutting for such a community-based project and we hope the residents of Yass Valley get behind the event,” Ms Abbey said.
Local federal member, the Hon. Dr Mike Kelly, will officially open the project on the day.
Donating their time for the community fitness class will be six personal trainers: Maree Doyle (Maree Doyle Personal Trainer and Wellness Consultant), Paul Humphries (Muscletown PT Yass), Michelle Corlett (Energia), Bronwyn Hadley (Clearview Coaching and Fitness Studio), Mellissa Ings (HardnFit) and Dave Barrie (Dave Barrie – Personal Development). Three trainers will be positioned at the fitness stations and three conducting additional circuits on the 1.6km loop of the river.
“If I can play a small part in helping to promote health, fitness and well-being to my local community, then I am helping to combat the increasing international obesity issue,” resident and personal trainer Maree Doyle said.
“Any infrastructure that we can build to promote fitness is fantastic in my eyes and I am really proud to be involved in this fantastic community project.”
A $20,000 Federal Government grant, matched by Yass Valley Council, was the foundation that this project needed. From there, community support grew with community groups and businesses getting on board. This project would not have been possible without the support of the following: Yass Rotary, Bendigo Bank, Yass Football Club, Mount Carmel School, Rob Pollack Concreting, Yass Rams Rugby Club, Yass Lions Clubs, Yass Runners Club and Out On a Limb Tree Surgery.
Pre-registration is mandatory for all participants. For more: www.yassvalley.nsw.gov.au/community-fitness-class.
