The main decrease came in fewer grown cattle penned. Yearlings made up the bulk of the offering and prime cattle remained in short supply.
Around 280 cows were offered. Not all the usual processing orders were operating but there were a few extra re-stockers competing for cows and heifers.
The market was dearer with the exception of the few trade cattle which were cheaper due to quality.
Trade vealers ranged from 349c to 355c and light weaner steers to re-stockers topped at 417c/kg. Re-stocking steers were firm on average but the straight bred cattle were 15c stronger and prices ranged from 318c to 364c/kg. Restocking heifers gained 6c selling from 310c to 343c/kg.
Lamb numbers at the SELX prime sheep sale on Wednesday, March 22, were down considerably to 4,800 head in a fair to poor quality yarding of mostly 16-22kg lambs.
Few heavy or extra heavy lambs were present. Re-stockers and processors battled for the mostly secondary stock in a rain affected market that was $7 to $14/head dearer and saw prices exceeding 700c/kg cwt.
