They will be doorknocking over the weekend of May 27-28 to collect donations.

According to the organisation, the gap between the “haves” and “have-nots” is widening in the Yass area.

It said that despite Australia being a wealthy nation, the demand on its services is greater than ever.

The Salvation Army’s Major Warren Lock said hard times for some families could be just one pay cheque away, with many families in the Yass area doing it tough and relying on The Salvation Army for support.

Major Lock said that for The Salvation Army to meet the growing demand on its services, the community’s support was needed now more than ever.

The Salvos aim to mobilise 60,000 people nationally to raise more than $8 million over the Red Shield Appeal doorknock weekend.

“By giving us just a few hours of your time, you can make a meaningful difference to the lives of people doing it tough,” he said.

“Giving hope where it’s needed most.”

Groups in Yass Valley, including community, churches, scouts, guides, sporting clubs, workplaces and anyone willing to lend a hand, are encouraged to volunteer time to get involved with the annual fundraiser.
