The convoy drove 290 kilometres of the old Hume Highway, paying homage to pioneers of road transport while raising money for ASPECT (Autism Spectrum Australia). The bi-annual event has become the largest road rally of its type in Australia and donated close to $60,000 to help children with autism, with some of the funds being directed to both the Goulburn and Yass districts.

As well as raising money for ASPECT, Haulin’ the Hume organisers made a $5000 donation to Yass Valley Council, which will be put towards an accessibility swing at Riverbank Park.

“As the event organisers for Haulin’ the Hume, we work really closely with council staff who always go above and beyond for our event,” event organiser Bruce Gunter said. “Being able to make this contribution towards an accessible swing to Yass is really pleasing and we look forward to bringing the event back in 2019.”

Mayor Rowena Abbey said the Riverbank Park playground is the only one in Yass Valley that does not have a swing set. “It was our first choice when looking at how to use this donation for the benefit of our residents and visitors to Yass,” Cr Abbey said.

“The organisers of this event are to be truly commended for not only the magnitude of the event but also the amount of money they have raised for children with autism. Yass Valley is very proud to welcome and support this event and thank the organisers for their donation.”

Council staff have started installing the equipment and anticipate opening the swing for the public in June 2017. More about the opening will be announced shortly.
