Taylah Isbister made some strong runs and was unlucky not to score. The U6s White are strong defenders and work well together. Flynn Pack-McLucas was strong in defence and attack and earned the players trophy this week. Well done mighty Whites.
Under 6s Black
The U6 Black came up against their toughest competition yet in the Woden Rams side, which resulted in a 44–44 scoreline.
Game captain Ashton Curtis won the toss and chose to kick off to start the game. The Rams were quick off the mark and scored a fast first try. Jaiden Ings had a great run early in the game followed up by Charlie Jamieson who pushed through the pack to put points on the board for Yass. The Magpies were strong in defence with Charlie putting a stop to most of the Rams hit ups.
Oscar Walsh-Devoe had some good runs with fancy stepping and Billy Buser coped a hard tackle from the Rams but got up unscathed. The game was try for try with Jaiden and Sid Luckie scoring fast strong tries before the first quarter buzzer.
Jaiden put more points on the board but the Rams answered each try with another of their own. Charlie was unbeatable in defence with incredible tackling skills. Lochie Ings was great in attack and Charlie followed him up and scored another try. Jaiden had some great tackles but the Rams were relentless.
Billy and Lochie were super quick in attack and Jaiden made strong charges up the field. Charlie finished off the set with a one-handed try.
Sid scored a try at the beginning of the third quarter and Cooper Downey made himself known with tough tackles but the Rams never backed down. Lochie's up-field runs only got better and Cooper put more points on the board for the Magpies. Charlie proved to be the king of tackling with Yass remaining strong in defence the entire game. Jaiden and Oscar continued their strong run in attack and Sid scored another try. Ashton had some good straight hit ups and Billy some hard tackles. Jaiden finished up the game with a quick and impressive try for the Magpies.
Tries: Charlie 4, Sid 3, Jaiden 3, Cooper 1.
Player of the week: Oscar Walsh-Devoe.
Under 6s Grey
U6 Yass Grey took on U6 West Belconnen. A week off made a big difference. A really good effort from our team against a good Belconnen team. We had lots of tries from both teams with Tai, Trae and Lucas scoring plenty. I was really happy with Brayden, Troy and Megan’s strong runs and it was a barnstorming Bella who won player of the day. We lost by two tries but a great effort from both teams today.
Under 8s
The U8s took on the Belconnen Sharks Black team and went down 6–22 against a well drilled team. The boys were slow off the defensive line, bunched around the ruck and kept running sideways instead of forward, all of which cost them the win at the end of the day.
Takai Chatfield was the only player to break through the line on the day, converted by Jack Ryan. Angus Kelly in his debut topped the tackle count along with Sutherland Holliday. Some great defensive efforts were displayed by Jack Jamieson and Brock Lenon as well.
Liam Beeten, George Foran, William Hall, and Tyler Smith made some good supportive runs and tackles.
Player of the day went to Angus Kelly.
Under 9s
The U9s took on Queanbeyan United Black at home. The Magpies were beaten 32–16 but played well and with their usual great attitude. Their game really stepped up in the second half but unfortunately it wasn't quite enough to change the score board. Player of the Day was Abbie Walls who had an absolute ripper of a game. Special mention goes out to Jett, Will, Max and Lochie who all showed great defensive and attacking skills.
Under 10s
The U10s played the Bungendore Tigers last Sunday. Captain Sean Bell led out the team in perfect conditions. Will Downey coming back from an injury layoff was straight back into the thick of things with speedy runs and great tackles and claimed the man of the match award for his great contribution.
Josh Inkster showed great vision and strength out of dummy half to score his first try for the year to get Yass on the board first.
Kyle Shoard and Joey Timmer showed their speed and evasion skills to both cross for long range tries of their own. While Connor Shepherd, Baxton Lane and Hunter Stansfield all converted the three tries.
Brandon Davis displayed some good low tackling skills and he was assisted by Tom Jamison in that department. Jayda Danilczak was busy in attack getting thorough plenty of work taking up the ball.
Hunter also had a big work rate in attack and made plenty of big runs into the opposition half and only being caught by last ditch defence on several occasions. Connor also shone in the Yellow bib in the first half.
Too many missed tackles contributed to the lopsided score line against Yass but the players will be after a quick turn around when they play the ladder topping Sharks next Sunday.
Under 12s
The U12s team played at home last Sunday, against the North Canberra Bears team. Unfortunately a couple of mistakes by our team lead to an early try for the opposition.
Yass were competing well, however the bears caught the boys by surprise on a couple of occasions, which lead to tries throughout the game. In the second half Yass played a lot better, with the boys gaining confidence.
A special mention needs to go to Damo on his first game for the year coming back from a broken arm. Good on you Damo. Also Luke, who had an outstanding game and was unlucky not to come away with man of the match. Well done Luke.
At the final whistle, Yass went down 28–18. Men of the match went jointly to Lane and Timmy.
U15s
The U15s took the field verses the strong Dragons Red team last Sunday. Yass needed to borrow a few U14s for the game as current injuries and players away hampered numbers again on the day and would like to thank those boys for helping out and ensuring the 15s got to play the game. Thanks Tom Bell, Brock Pickhard, Jarome McGrath and Patrick McPhillips.
A forgettable first half display had coach Spider questioning the commitment of his players at half time with his spirited speech hitting the mark it helped spurn on his charges into displaying a much-improved display in the second half, which saw a 10-all score line result that seemed unheard of after watching the first half unfold.
Kai Douven was rewarded with a try after being a tower of strength in defence at fullback saving upward of four or five tries with great last line defence.
Tom Bell backing up after a blinder in his own age group was again a tower of strength up the middle and he was also successful in getting across the try line to score a try of his own.
Jayden Caldwell converted one of the tries and he continues to be best on ground each week for the Pies.
Joel Blyss was in everything in attack and defence and proved a constant menace for the Dragons.
The rest of the team played there part in a improved second half and will be itching to start the next game how they finished this one. Hoping to get a few back from injury for next Sunday’s game.
