Yass Valley was declared a natural disaster, with above average rainfall wreaking havoc across the Local Government Area during autumn, winter and spring.
“Our staff have carried out extensive investigations into our damaged road network, putting together a comprehensive claim to Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) and we welcome the approved claim of over $3.5 million,” Yass Valley mayor Rowena Abbey said.
“A majority of the damage caused during the natural disaster was to our gravel roads and we thank the community for their patience with regards to repairs, which will now get underway with this funding.”
To date, council has undertaken $890,000 of emergency repair work to infrastructure damaged during the natural disaster, with remaining repair work now able to progress with council’s claim approved by RMS.
“Much of the approved work relates to reinstatement of gravel on unsealed roads and restoration of scoured drains,” director of engineering Robert Fish said.
“Due to the large amount of work to be undertaken, it is proposed that a tender will be compiled and advertised at the end of June or early July. Under this tender a panel of contractors will be created to deliver the majority of the work,” Mr Fish said.
Councillors will be considering a recommendation to invite tenders at the council meting on Wednesday June 28, starting at 4pm. The community is welcome to attend this meeting with all council meetings open to the general public.
