“Just across the bridge” you will hear Yass locals say when giving out-of-towners directions to the swimming pool, the skate park, local schools or aged care facilities.
Many of the town’s important services – water and sewerage, schooling, aged care, recreational, accommodation, sporting and shopping – are located in North Yass.
There is something for everyone over the bridge.
At the foot of the bridge sits the town’s oldest school. Yass Public School opened in January 1879 under the charge of Mr James Brierly. In 2007, Yass Public School won the NSW Department of Education and Training Award for Excellence in Teaching and Learning. It boasts a proud tradition of providing quality education in a picturesque environment.
On the other side, is Yass High School - a mid-size rural comprehensive high school with an immensely proud record of providing the best academic, social and sporting experiences for local students for over 50 years.
The town’s aged care facilities are also located in North Yass.
Horton House is a charitable, not for profit organisation, which was made possible following a bequest from one of the citizens of Yass. On March 17, 1982, Elsie Horton died and left a bequest for the establishment of a nursing home in Yass. In 1990, The Yass Nursing Home Foundation Inc. was born to head up the fundraising program needed to raise sufficient money to enable construction. The community of Yass raised just over one third the cost of the project, the remainder coming from the Commonwealth Government and Miss Horton’s bequest. The foundation stone was laid on April 7, 1991 and the nursing home opened on September 26, 1992.
Warmington Lodge, then Gwen Warmington Lodge, was opened on November 16, 1979 by the Governor General Sir Zelman Cowan. It was built from a grant to the then Yass Municipal Council for an Aged Persons Hostel from the Department of Social Security and from funds donated by the community. Traditionally a hostel, it is now an ageing on-site facility representing the increased frailty of current residents.
Thomas Eccles Gardens is a living community for 82 seniors who are provided with residential nurses and care assistants. Thomas Eccles Gardens is designed for people who need medical/rehabilitative care, restorative care and dementia care. Linton Village comprises spacious two and three-bedroom residences that offer a perfect complement for carefree, independent living in a peaceful setting with beautiful rural views.
Across the bridge in Yass you will find something for everyone of all ages.
