It has been six difficult years since Jane Ebert lost her beloved brother, Wayne Gouge.
What she remembers most about those dark days was how the Yass community stepped in and stepped up to help her family through the grief.
In particular, the mother-of-six said she will never forget the support offered to her family by the Yass Magpies Junior Rugby League Club.
Coaches and club members all pitched in to make sure her two eldest sons made it to training each week and had lifts to matches in Canberra on the weekend.
This help extended to when her husband, Cian Ebert, was injured in a workplace accident and confined to a wheelchair for many months.
“The Magpies came to us and said, ‘how can we help?’ and ‘what can we do?’...and we will never forget their help and the kindness and care.”
The Eberts, owners of locally-based concrete company Ebert Concreting, decided to show their thanks by sponsoring tracksuits for all members of the Yass Magpies Under 16’s side.
While the gesture is a token of appreciation and gratitude, it delves a lot deeper than that. Jane wants the tracksuits and bench jackets, which proudly bear the embroidered inscription, ‘The Wayne Gouge Cause’, to be the first step of many in memory of her brother.
Jane has dedicated the Wayne Gouge Cause to supporting young men in the community in the hope of breaking down the barriers attached to mental health.
“The tracksuits are a way for us to help give confidence to the Under 16’s and a way for us to begin the work of the Wayne Gouge Cause.”
Jane said the tracksuits would not have been possible without the support and expertise of TJs Embroidery in Yass.
“Tanya and Toni were amazing and worked tirelessly to have these tracksuits ready for our boys.”
She also expressed her sincere thanks to the following representatives of the Yass Magpies Junior Rugby League Club for their ongoing support of all players and their families: Mel Beck, Peter Timmer, Greg O’Brien and coach Tony Vitler.
“Thank you from the bottom of our hearts,” Jane said.
