Under 6 Black
The sideline might have been packed with dusty parents fresh from Bogan Bingo, but the U6 Blacks pulled up their pink socks and came out firing against their mates, the Yass Magpies Whites.
Lochie Ings put the first points on the board for the black team with an impressive hit up and try.
Lochie was strong and consistent all game, taking on the opposition and stopping them in their tracks. He ran the ball with determination, pushing through the pack, always on a mission towards the try line.
Sidney Luckie was speedy as ever, chasing down the ball runners and catching them more times than not. In attack, his pace was an asset, outrunning the Whites who were out to stop him and making his way over the line a number of times.
Cooper Downey showed our other team his super hero strength, stopping every ball runner that came his way. He ran the ball up the field and pushed through the opposition like a steam train.
In true style, Charlie Jamieson’s first touch of the ball resulted in a quick try and it was not the last. He had some spectacular hit ups and charged past the opposition with brute force, answering every try for the white team with another for his black team. In defence, the ball carrier couldn’t escape his pace and strength.
Jaiden Ings kicked off and instantly proved to the other Yass side that he was one to watch. He weaved around the defenders, constantly outsmarting and out pacing them, resulting in multiple impressive tries for his team.
Ashton Curtis was focused when running the ball, charging straight and copping some hard tackles along the way. He topped the hitup count this week, working hard for his side.
Billy Buser ran with plenty of heart and was bouncing off defenders. He had a big kick-off in the last half and proved his little legs were also capable of lightning speed, powering towards the try line when it was his turn to run the ball.
The Magpies have only one game left for the season and are on track to finish with a bang. Great game boys! Final score: 52–52. Tries: Jaiden 4, Charlie 3, Sid 3, Lochie 1. Player of the week: Jaiden Ings
Under 6 White
The U6 Whites had a great game! Lots of tries, some great running and tackling, second phase play and excellent team work from the Mighty Whites.
Harrison Waters scored five tries and had a massive tackle count, Noah Hall consistent in attack scored two, Flynn Pack-McLucas one try and some solid defence and backing up.
Charlie Clarke achieved his tackle goal and scored a great try. Harry Donoghue tackled consistently across the quarters and made some metres on the restart. Jed Newman was full of running, busting tackles, to score three tries. He was consistent in defence and earned the title pink ball for best player. Go the Mighty Whites.
Under 6 Grey
The U6 Grey took on Queanbeyan on August 13. They had a narrow loss on a nice sunny day.
The team are getting better at tackling and were led strongly by Megan who tackled her heart out she also scored a try.
Brayden had a strong warm up and tried second phase play with his passing in the game. Bella as always gives her best and had some good runs and is improving every game. It was good to see Tai on the field this week and was a nice contributor with four tries. Lucas also loves to score with five tries himself.
Trae was the pink ball winner today with big runs resulting in two tries and always tackling the bigger kids without fear. A happy coach today well done team
Under 8s
The boys played like we know they can this week for the first time in a while and picked up their defence, taking home the win against the Valley Dragon Red team 38–22.
Jack Ryan crossed the line for a hat trick, kicked a conversions and was strong in defence. Sutherland Holliday was close behind with two tries, a conversion and awesome defence topping the tackle count.
Takai Chatfield and Brodie Poidevin Warden both scored one try and made some good tackles. Alex Bell was second in the tackle count and kicked one conversion, and out little lightweight Liam Beeten really stepped up his defence making eight tackles, third in the count.
Jack Jamieson made some impressive saves from behind as he always does and kicked a conversion. Birthday boy William Hall made some impressive steps to make it across the line.
George Foran impressed the ref on the day taking home the pink game ball. We’re hoping their renewed enthusiasm for tackling continues for the last couple of rounds.
Under 12s
The U12s team played at home last Sunday against the third ranked team Belconnen United Sharkies.
Once again Yass fielded only 13 players, but all the boys were streaming with confidence. The Sharkies most likely thought they would have an easy game as they sat the biggest and strongest player on the bench in the first half, but as our team have displayed over the last four games, that is far from what happened.
What is allowing our boys to be competitive is some simple straight up runs for the first few of each set by our big forwards, then spread the ball for the gaps out wide.
Half way through the first half the scores were locked at nil all, then a magical intercept from Cody scoring a length of the field try is what our team needed to kick our game off. The try was converted by Coby right in front of uprights.
A second try then went to Timmy with an awesome run out wide, with the conversion going to Noah.
At half time, Coach Jai Smith was pleased with the effort of our boys getting up in the face of the opposition with Yass leading 12 nil.
Noah, Callum and Daniel were strong in defence, with Lane breaking the defence’s line on a couple of occasions.
Sharkies put a couple tries on the board shortly after half time, catching Yass. Yass remained positive after the Sharkies had scored, but the Sharkies went onto score two more tries, and Yass only one, which was scored by Daniel. Callum’s conversation bounced off and away from the upright, and unfortunately missed.
All the boys again had a great attitude and worked near perfectly together as a team. A special mention needs to go to Billie who was outstanding in defence making 15 tackles. What a great display it was, with Yass going down 24–16. Well done boys.
Cody Bell who was the proud recipient of the pink game ball which were all proudly donated by the Ngunnawal Aboriginal Corporation.
