At Victoria Park, the Yass Golf Club Snipers took on the Yass Golf Club Piranhas.
With the overcast weather, there was a chance that the Snipers would soon look back on their decision to bat first with regret.
Things were especially ominous when the Piranhas picked up four wickets before the drinks break, to leave the Snipers teetering on the brink of a disastrous collapse in the rematch of last year’s grand final.
However, thanks to a gritty innings of 62 by captain Dave Field, the Snipers cobbled together a respectable total of 112.
The tables then turned, when the Piranhas’ batting innings also fell apart early.
The dismissal of local star Dan Poidevin left the Piranhas teetering three wickets down early in the second innings.
However, last season’s champions were unable to inflict any further damage, and the Piranhas cruised to the total without losing any further wickets.
Meanwhile, on the other side of town, the Bowning Buffaloes were getting decimated by the Aussie Pirates at O’Connor Park.
The Buffaloes collapsed to 83 all out, from 33 overs, and the Pirates chased the runs down inside 20 overs to mark an emphatic start to the 2017/18 season.
