The run raised over $7,500 for the school, and Yass Public School Principal Michelle Fahey believes that this is down to the involvement of the kids in the fundraising process.
“We wanted to have a fundraiser at school that the kids could actually enjoy and be part of as well,” Ms Fahey said.
“Because we think that when they start earning the money, they get really interested in what we’re gonna spend the money on.”
The children took to the oval in what is being called their Peer Support Groups, which consisted of roughly 10-15 kids per group.
These groups were designed to encourage leadership potential and allow the kids to develop teamwork skills.
“We’ve had a peer support program running all year,” Ms Fahey said.
“The older kids have had their leadership strategies strengthened, they’ve been to courses to learn about skills to lead.”
The children spent the better part of an hour running from station to station on the oval, getting doused in pink, blue, green, and yellow powders, along with water.
They were also encouraged to create team chants, which they sang before the event started for the crowd of parents who had gathered.
Treasurer of the Yass Public School P&C Association, Belinda Banfield, was very optimistic about the fundraiser, and expressed her delight at the amount of money the children raised.
“I just can’t believe it,” Ms Banfield said.
“I thought if we got to four or five thousand, that would be an amazing achievement.
“It’s a small school, but the kids really wanted to get into it.”
It is unclear whether or not the school will look to make the colour run an annual event, but Ms Banfield said that the P&C committee were certainly keen to organise it again following the success of the inaugural event.
