For the past two weeks students have been attending classes at a range of venues around Yass.
“Thanks to all parents for your understanding over the past weeks and to our partner schools and community who have provided such welcoming venues,” Yass High principal Sandra Hiscock said.
Year 11 students spent their time at Berinba Public, working in comfortably with the primary school students.
Berinba principal Ray Claydon said there were only positive things to come out of the terrible situation which brought the schools together.
The students are utilising the library and computer facilities as well as a demountable building that was available at the time.
“They’re playing with our kids in the playground, they’re teaching them basketball,” he said.
“Half of them are ex-Berinba kids.”
He praised the “mature, young adults” that had been wandering the hallways and looking in the archives for photographs from when they were at the school.
Principal of Yass Public, Jenny Garnett, agreed having the high school students back was just like “old times”.
“It’s been very smooth,” she said. “It has been fabulous; they’ve all been very flexible moving around classrooms.”
And the principal said it was nice having the year eight students in the playground offering some peer support.
“We’d prefer to not have these circumstances [but] it’s been working well.”
Years seven, nine and 10 were at the Baptist Church, TAFE and Memorial Hall. For the latest on when the high school will be fully operating, see the Tribune’s website and Facebook page.
