Firefighters will undertake a backburn around 6pm from that containment line back into the timber.
There is still a lot of fire burning within the containment lines, with winds blowing from the east.
"The cool weather has been very kind to us," Peter Dyce said.
Crews will be on the scene throughout the night and into tomorrow to get the fire under control.
Firefighters will be backburning at another large fire at Bevandale, further north of Yass this evening.

2.38pm: A wind change has caused the fire to split and there are two fronts currently burning out of control. The northern flank of the fire is burning in timber and heavy machinery is on the way to help contain it.
A smaller fire on the southern side, although still out of control, is being contained.
2.15pm: Rain falling in the area is helping firefighters get a hold on the blaze.

The fire is burning through green timber but firefighters believe once it reaches open ground they will be able to contain it quickly.
Two water bombers were dispatched to the fire.
"If they're not there now, they won't be far away," Superintendent Dyce said.
