The competition was abandoned several years ago because there was a lack of young women wanting to put their hand up but Amy hopes the society could bring it back to life.

After Amy enquired about whether a competition would be run this year, the society installed her as the representative for 2013.

“I think people were just unaware of it.” She said people didn’t realise “the sort of opportunities you can get from it, from the people you meet”.

Now working for the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries in Canberra, Amy decided she’d find out about the competition in her home town in Yass.

“I think the reason I got involved was for the 150 years of the show society. It’s just a really good way to get involved in all that.”

The show is an event the young woman was tied to while growing up at Merinji Hill, just out of Yass.

“I entered things growing up; art and baking and things like that. I helped out in the arena… I was in pony club when I was little.”

The ANU graduate went to Nowra recently for an introductory weekend where she met showgirls from around NSW.

“If you are interested in agriculture and have an opinion on a number of issues that include women or youth… then it’s a really good opportunity to talk to people in the same industry.”

She will be travelling to Bega on February 23, accompanied by family and show society friends, to take part in the regional finals.

The winner at the Bega event will go on to compete at the Royal Easter Show in Sydney.

“We wish Amy every success and much enjoyment in her quest at the Bega regional finals and we thank her very sincerely for her interest and participation,” the show society said.
