The Idea of North is regarded as one of the best exponents in the world of this style of music and their fame had spread before them in anticipation of their performance and consists of Sally Cameron (soprano), Joy Hague (deputy alto), Nick Begbie (tenor) and Andrew Piper (bass) and has been the recipients of many distinguished awards in the broader music world.
They brought to us a brilliant selection of songs and these included the amazing Joni Mitchell protest song, 'Big Yellow Taxi', the haunting 'Meet Me in the Middle of the Air', the evocative 'Rachel', the almost Negro spiritualish 'Keep My Supper Warm', the Stevie Wonder 'Knocks me off My Feet', a very creative trawl through music by John Williams on a 'Star Wars' theme through to a stirring rendition of 'I Still Call Australia Home'. Many of the songs they sang for us had been composed by them giving a special flavour to the concert and they thoroughly deserved the standing ovation at the conclusion of the concert.
As well as their beautiful and unique singing and the obvious enjoyment there was the sense of genuine affection which they had for each other and this, no doubt, has affected the way they sing.
Special mention must also be made of the fine amplification and spectacular lighting under the direction of Lloyd and his crew, who kindly shared some of their skills with students from Yass High.
An important part of the Idea of North performance evening at the Yass Memorial Hall was in the presentation of Dr RAG Holmes Award Certificates to our Scholars presented by Alfred McCarthy on behalf of Yass Rotary and these students will be performing at a concert at St Clements Church in August.
Supper was provided by the Music Club itself as there was no community group available to take on this task and this is disappointing as we are anxious to give such groups additional funding to assist in the good community work that they do.
The Music Club also appreciates the generous support of Woolworths, IGA, Home Hardware and the Crisp Galleries as well as the many agencies which helped in our publicity for the concert.
Our next concert is on Saturday April 18 when the Llewellyn Choir will be singing songs from World War I in the week before Anzac Day.
