This leaves us with the Under-10s and Under-14s representing the Magpies in the Grand Final Round. The round is split over the weekend. It’s supposed to be a weekend full of sunshine, so get over to Canberra Stadium if you can and cheer the boy’s home to a Premiership!
The Yass Golf Club Under-10s have had a really enjoyable year in their first year where they play for points and semi-finals. In 13 games we won 10, drew one and lost only two.
At the completion of the regular season the mighty under-10s finished second overall and only just missed being minor premiers by one point. In our major semi-final we won a tight game 22 to 16 over Crookwell who were the minor premiers. That put us in the grand final this Saturday at GIO Stadium, Canberra against Goulburn at 10am.
The little under-10s are a great bunch of kids. One of our new players Daniel Ginders is our leading try scorer, with 22, and he is also equal leader in the under-10 competition for Zone 2. Coby Yates is our leading goal kicker with nine goals from 10 attempts. Timmy McPhillips and Lane Davis have been our most consistent players. Joseph McCarter and Tom Anderson have excelled in their first season of league and Luke Davis, Cameron Stanford and Billy Walls have been playing well all year too. Damon Shoard, Darcy Coates and Joe Hewett have been our big improvers.
Our little under-10 team have also been blessed with the inclusion of two young gems from our under-9 team in Jarred Carey and Lucas McPherson who are helping us out in the finals.
Best of luck boys!
The Hi-Way Motor Inn sponsored Under-14 Magpies travel to GIO Stadium this Sunday to take on the Queanbeyan Kangaroos in the grand final. The game will be played at 10:15am.
It has been a terrific year for the boys thus far with just the one loss early in the season. They opened the year with a solid 50 point win over the Tuggeranong Buffaloes but the win came with the costly loss of Cian Ebert with a broken collar bone.
Further injuries and illness saw an under strength magpies go down to the Queanbeyan Kangaroos 14-0 away from home, before the boys steadied with good wins over West Belconnen and the South Tuggeranong Knights.
The boys have remained undefeated since, with a mixture of strong performances and erratic form seeing them struggle at times to put sides away that they were expected to beat. The Kangaroos have been the biggest rivals for the magpies this season and were the only side to beat Yass this year back in round 3.
In the final match of the season the minor premiership came down to who would win between Yass and the Roos at Freebody Oval in Queanbeyan, and the boys took the minor premiership with a hard fought 22-18 victory. This resulted in a week off for both sides before they again met in the major semi-final.
On this occasion the Magpies put it all together on the day and defeated the Roos 28-14 to go straight into the grand final. The Roos then took on the South Tuggeranong Knights to earn another shot at Yass and they came away with a huge victory to set up what could be a thrilling grand final.
The return of Cian Ebert and the improvement of each and every player in the side assisted in the long winning streak this year and a place in the season decider.
On a personal note some of the boys achieved milestones with Jarrad Hulme being the competitions leading point scorer and Blake Watson leading the try scoring tally. Lachlan Davis also featured high on the try scoring list.
The full side for the big one is: Jarrad Hulme, Brody Butt, Cian Ebert, Lachie Davis, Jack Diamond, Jordan Vitler, Jayden Ginders, Tom Skillin, Jay O’Brien, Blake Watson, Richard Maher, Josh Laker, Tyler Waters, Kendall Barber, Jason Davis, Shayne Moran, Daniel Davaris and Luke Miller. The side is coached by former Canberra Raider Steve O’Callaghan.
Hopefully if the boys can put it all together on Sunday they can come away with the premiership. Good Luck boys!
