The series of 10 podcasts are designed for people in Yass Valley affected by cancer, including carers, families and friends of those living with cancer.

Elizabeth Veasey, chairperson of the Yass branch, said she wished the podcasts were around when her mum was diagnosed with cancer.

“These podcasts are an amazing resource. As someone who was only five when her mum had a stroke and subsequently diagnosed with a brain tumour, I found it incredibly hard to comprehend why my mum was sick and what was going on,” she said.

She said the resources will help people explain their situations to their kids.

“If only these resources were available back then, it would have made life a lot easier for my mum,” Ms Veasey said.

Julie McCrossin, renowned radio broadcaster and cancer survivor, hosts the series. Each podcast is presented in an interview-style format featuring expert guests and people with personal experiences of cancer.

“We know that every year in the southern region alone, it is estimated that about 1505 people will be diagnosed with cancer,” Ms McCrossin said.

“Often they are dealing with complex decisions that require an understanding of cancer, its treatment, and its ongoing management.”

Ms McCrossin said the episode ‘Explaining cancer to kids’ is “one I think will resonate with a lot of Yass families”.

Sally Lewis, Cancer Council NSW’s community program coordinator, said the podcast series was a first for the organisation.

“We are always exploring new and innovative ways for people to access information and support that is relevant to them,” Ms Lewis said.

The podcast series are a vital resource that resulted from community fundraising events such as the Yass Relay For Life.
