“It’s been a great collaborative effort.” said Derryth Nash, Yass Valley Council’s Road Safety Officer.
The Country Roads Safety campaign coincided with Operation Chrome, a NSW Police program targeting rural road trauma in southern NSW.
Yass Police also hosted “Coffee with a Cop”, with one-on-one conversations had with over 100 local residents about safe driving practices.
“The operation was very successful and we received some positive feedback from drivers, who welcomed a police presence on country roads,” said Yass Highway Patrol Sergeant, Stephen Pigeon.
Joining Yass Valley Council in promoting safe driving on country roads was Goulburn Mulwaree, Griffith City, Queanbeyan Palerang, Snowy Monaro and Wingecarribee Shire councils. Goulburn Mulwaree Council’s Road Safety Officer, Tracey Norberg, highlighted the importance of collaboration between the six councils and NSW Police.
“The Country Roads Safety campaign works because we are able to spread the message over a major part of southern NSW, while supported by the police,” said Ms Norberg.
Facebook has proved to be a fantastic way to engage with road users and to spread the Country Roads Safety message. During the two week campaign, over 60,000 people were reached online with close to 4,000 Facebook engagements recorded.
