The Yass Gymnastics team has bounced, tumbled, and balanced its way to gold in the freshly reinstated NSW Team Gym State Championships in Sydney last weekend.
Coach and owner of the Yass Gymnastics, Michelle Vitler, was extremely pleased with the team’s efforts, but explained why she was confident that the girls would bring home the gold.
“The routine was really good and really polished, so I’m really happy with their lead-up,” Ms Vitler said.
However, Ms Vitler did admit to some nerves when she saw the calibre of the gymnasts and routines that they were competing against at the championships.
“It was literally NSW wide, so there was a lot of competitors from other regions,” she said.
“So you never know [what they’ll come up with].”
The Yass Gymnastics team had never competed in TeamGym before this year, but after their inaugural competition in July earned them gold, Ms Vitler decided to see how far the girls could take it.
They also received gold medals in Illawarra and silver medals in a competition in Orange, which acted as a lead-up to the state championships.
The team was one of 44 to take part, and they competed in the intermediate division of the state championships, which was one of three divisions available.
Following their victory, the team will compete in the advanced division next year, and Ms Vitler is sure that the girls will be able to handle it.
“I think they are,” she said.
“After this year, they’re quite keen. They’re still competing in their normal artistic gymnastics so that keeps them up with their skills.”
Following the team’s success at nationals, and considering the amount of travel that went into competing in the TeamGym events around the state, Ms Vitler expressed her enthusiasm for having an event in Yass sometime early next year.
“We’re looking at hosting a TeamGym competition in Yass, actually,” Ms Vitler said.
“I’ve been in discussions with the NSW Gymnastics … I’m hoping to get a competition run [in] March.”
If she can get a competition off the ground, Ms Vitler said that teams from as far as Dubbo expressed interest.
