About 50 people attended the Yass and District Historical Society’s (YDHS) end-of-year gathering at Cliftonwood, Yass, on December 2 to celebrate the society’s achievements in 2017.

The major highlight was four members being awarded life memberships, presented by patron Marion McCarthy – a life member of the society herself.

Maureen Collins, Roma Longley, Diane MacQuillan and Bill Pigram were recognised with the awards for their commitment and dedication to YDHS.

Maureen Collins joined in 2001 and was recognised for the following:

  • Secretary: 2006–present
  • Treasurer: 2005–13
  • Archives coordinator: 2016–present
  • Guide at the Yass and District Museum

Roma Longley joined in 1998 and was recognised for the following:

  • Work with archival collections
  • Guide at the Yass and District Museum
  • Assistance with family inquiries, transcription of various records and indexing of local newspapers

Diane MacQuillan joined after Christmas in 1998 and was recognised for the following:

  • Vice president: 2014–present
  • Publicity officer: 2000–11 and 2014
  • Work at the collection of archives
  • Guide at the Yass and District Museum

Bill Pigram joined in 2000 and was recognised for the following:

  • President: 2003
  • Vice president: 2004–13
  • Commitment to the collection at Yass and District Museum

Cheryl Morgan, president of YDHS, said other highlights in 2017 included the Whole Histories conference in April.

“More than 100 people attended the three-day conference – that was our biggest event ever.

“We were pleasantly surprised about the responses,” Ms Morgan said.

Dr Richard Reid, a life member, was also recently made a fellow of the Federation of Australian Historical Societies – one of only three awarded nationally.

On the night, YDHS also launched a major raffle as a fundraiser for the society.

Tickets are $2 each and prizes include stays at the Globe Inn and vouchers for Clementine.

Tickets will be drawn in March 2018.
