Pirates wicketkeeper Brad Wylie said that he feels confident ahead of the first match of the new year, however he and the team remain wary of the dangers Bowning pose.
“We’ve gotta bowl well, their top five or top six are pretty dangerous,” Wylie said.
“If they get going, you’re in a bit of trouble. Other than that, obviously, we gotta bat alright.”
The batting has been the focal point of the Pirates’ success this season. Their success has been mercurial, and they are equally likely to post a big score as they are to collapse without warning.
“We’re sorta relying on Nick Pollack to score a few runs most weeks,” Wylie said.
“So if more batters can contribute to the score, we can work more on bowling them out early.”
Currently, the Pirates are sitting at third on the ladder, however the teams are still close enough on points that anybody can finish on top by season’s end.
“I think anyone can finish first,” Wylie said, “[but] obviously you gotta win the majority of the last games [of the season].”
The Pirates will play the Buffaloes at Bowning Oval on Saturday January 13, starting at 12:00pm.
