SPARK in partnership with Zac’s Zac’s Place, Yass Community Garden, TAFE NSW and the Southern Region Business Enterprise Centre are delivering an accredited training program focusing on skills development, work experience and potential employment within the construction sector.
Targeting people in Yass Valley and NSW surrounding regions, the program will provide participants with the following.
- A certificate II in construction pathways (CPC20211) upon completion.
- A white card ticket.
- Industry-specific training at a live training site with projects to include concreting, paving, construction of retaining walls, timber form work, use of hand and power tools and landscaping.
- Industry work placements for those participants that meet the selection criteria
- Potential employment pathway opportunities
In 2017, participants constructed a new driveway, new pathway, paving in the garden and brickwork at Zac’s Place.
The 2018 program will again combine theory, practical learning and industry work placement.
Program manager Emma Sckrabei said the program was the second year it was introduced in Yass.
“The tasks this year will be a bit more varied, including retaining wall in front of the garden and more work on Zac’s Place,” she said.
The program will deliver theory at NSW Tafe, Yass campus.
“It will allow the students to use more machinery at Tafe before applying it practically onsite,” Ms Sckrabei said.
The program is opened to anyone older than 17 years old, and an information session is scheduled for Tuesday, February 20 at 10am at TAFE NSW Yass campus (51 Church Street).
“It’s a great chance to try out and get some immediate knowledge and skills, especially for young people who may want to explore other options after school.
“We’re aiming to have about 20 people start the program this year,” Ms Sckrabei said.
The program will run three days a week (Tuesday–Thursday), consisting of 26 hours per week for 14 weeks.
To be eligible for this program at the time of enrolment:
- 17 years old or over (this age eligibility is set specific for this program)
- No longer at school

A small fee will apply for each successful participant depending on their eligibly.
