Fourteen shelters will be constructed in total using funding that Yass Valley Council received from the Country Passenger Transport Infrastructure Grants Scheme.
“This investment into our public transport infrastructure is vital for our growing community and I really applaud residents for being so actively involved in this process,” Yass Valley mayor Rowena Abbey said.
The Murrumbateman bus shelters will be the first to be built, with the contractors splitting the project into two stages:
- South Street, Governor Drive, Merryville Drive (two), Suffolk Avenue, Isabel Drive, McIntosh Circuit and Acacia Way
Stage two will commence in February with council staff still working closely with villages to determine the best location/s for shelters:
- Linden Close (Murrumbateman), Morning Street (Gundaroo), Cork Street (Gundaroo), Lot Street (Gundaroo), Wargeila Road (Yass) and Leake Street (Bowning).
“While we initially applied to build 24 shelters and install lighting at one shelter, we have had to revise this to 14 due to final location suitability and also to manage the additional maintenance and ongoing costs associated with these new assets,” Cr Abbey said.
“It is always difficult not to take full advantage of grant funding, but council made a financially responsible decision to decrease the number of shelters so we can account for their ongoing costs within our budget.”
