Yass Valley Council was successful in receiving a $350,000 federal-government grant for repairs to the pavement and improvements to drainage, which mayor Rowena Abbey said was “long overdue and will be very much welcomed by the community”.
The works will be on the western side of the roundabout, the side that has the most damage due to sub-soil moisture.
While this work is undertaken contra flow traffic control will be in place 24 hours a day, with an anticipated project completion before Easter.
The council is urging drivers to be aware of the changes that will occur to traffic flow.
“Residents need to be aware that this is a major operation and that there will be significant changes to traffic during the project.
“People need to allow additional time to reach their destination,” Yass Valley mayor Rowena Abbey said.
Asked about approximate time residents should allow themselves, the council said 10–15 minutes during busier times and 5–10 minutes for quieter times.
“It will depend on many variables – when you start work, what the traffic conditions are like at the time, etc.,” the council said on Facebook.
Cr Abbey said the damage to the pavement of the roundabout was well known to the people who drove this road daily.
“So improvements will be very much welcomed.
“But it is also these daily road users who will be the most affected. To them we ask for their patience and understanding during these roadworks,” she said.
The council’s engineering services manager Terry Cooper said council had been onsite with the contractor and had met with businesses surrounding the roundabout that may be affected.
“Both council and the contractor are well and truly aware of the traffic implications that this project will cause and we will be doing everything in our power to limit the effects caused,” Mr Cooper said.
Rain and material delays have been built into the project timeframes, to ensure the roundabout is open in time for the Easter holiday.
The community will be able to notify the project coordinators at any time if there is a traffic situation at the roundabout during construction.
