Men’s Shed President, Bob Nash, was on hand to accept the funding in the shape of a large cheque, and thanked the NSW government for its generosity.
While speaking to Ms Goward, Mr Nash explained his planned upgrades for Men’s Shed.
“[It’s] our tenth anniversary this year, and in appreciation to the council for what they’ve done for us, we were hoping to get a grant and install solar panels on the roof to feed back into the system,” Mr Nash said.
“And also to provide a little bit more comfort in our room there in the summertime or in winter with a bit of air conditioning or heating of some description.”
Ms Berejiklian was pleased with the opportunity to contribute to the funding of Men’s Shed, and she explained why she believes it is such an important part of the community.
“This Men’s Shed plays a vital role in the Yass community. As well as giving locals the opportunity to learn a new skill and contribute to projects, it’s a place where men can come and have a chat and a coffee,” Ms Berejiklian said.
“The NSW Government understands how important spaces like Yass Valley Men’s Shed are to communities, which is why I’m proud to announce $20,000 to install a rooftop solar system and air conditioning.”
In addition to their anniversary, Bob Nash also pointed out that the Men’s Shed has reached the 100 member milestone.
“We’ve got 100 members now, financial members,” Mr Nash said.
“240 members actually have gone through, [although] a lot of them have passed away or moved out of town.
“It’s been great.”
Following their conversation, Ms Goward remarked that she was “so pleased I could surprise you with this.”
“It is [a surprise],” Mr Nash replied, “I’m still shaking.”
