This might sound like the start of a Jerry Seinfeld witticism, but I can assure you it’s a genuine question.
Over the past few weeks, so many developments have begun on Comur Street, it’s starting to feel like a town-wide episode of Renovation Rescue.
Not that roadworks are anything new. As a former Canberra native, I’m used to seeing half the city buried under flashing lights and 40km/h speed limit signs lined up like dominoes.
However, it was a shock seeing the same thing going on in a small country town like Yass.
This is supposed to be the scene of idyllic calm.
Locals crossing the street, stopping to have a chat with a friend in one of the many cafes that line the thoroughfare. The birds twitter, a light breeze blows, sunlight warms the quiet town, but not today.
Instead, we have Soul Pattinson halfway through its transition into Priceline outlet, and just around the corner there are bollards and tape and large piles of dirt which seem to be integral to something.
Similarly, across the road there is some more development in front of the Commercial Hotel, which has impeded pedestrians and forced many into a road-crossing.
Then, finally, there was the high profile case of the clock tower around a fortnight ago.
Many commented on the fact the clock was missing half of its face, and although it ended up being a result of some much needed TLC and repairs, it caused quite the stir on the Facebook community.
This makes four – four! – developments on the same street!
This isn’t a complaint. Obviously the development needs to be done to maintain the functionality of the street, but to have it happen all at once is coincidence gone mad.
Hopefully, once the dust has settled (literally) and the tradies have gone home to sleep, Yass town will return to its peaceful ambience once more.
Leave the incessant roadwork to Canberra and Sydney. Big cities are so bustling and full of people, cars and animals that residents there are never truly calm.
We in Yass, on the other hand, can sit back, relax and sip our coffees. Who needs the stress of roadworks anyway?
