The Rams, boosted by the inclusion of their junior player and current Canberra Raiders forward Kalani Going, took the lead in the seventh minute through Keb Vaetoe.

However, the Yass Magpies hit back with two Jacob Toppin tries in two minutes to take the lead midway through the first half.

The first was a simple try from dummy-half by the Yass co-captain and was followed up by a long range try in the first set after the restart.

Steve Naughton instigated the move as he passed the ball to his winger Jai Smith who found himself with plenty of space down the short side. The winger darted 30 meters before passing back inside to Naughton. With Woden defenders approaching, Naughton passed it to the Magpies hooker to score his second.

The Woden Valley Rams started the second half the strong of the two sides and locked up the scores once again.

Sean Maloney’s grubber towards the in goal ricocheted off the post and into the grateful hands of Steven Ferry who planted the ball over the line. With regular goalkicker Michael Geiger injured, second-rower Ron Leapai took over kicking duties to make the score 12-12.

The Magpies hit back superbly as Yass co-captain Tommy Warner capatilised on a Jeff Morgan knock-on to regather the ball and score.

With 15 minutes remaining, Yass halfback Chris Rawlinson stepped up to the plate to slot a field goal.

Woden fought valiantly and were rewarded when Tyson Hodge crossed the line from close range to narrow the margin to one point and set up a grandstand finish.

However, the Yass Magpies held on to claim their second consecutive win of the season.
