As a legal practitioner and resident, I am alarmed at the loss of public amenities, particularly when they appear to be done without public consultation and by stealth. It seems there is no political appetite for closure, but plenty of smoke and mirrors to avoid scrutiny. Much like the demise of our small school networks, where this government’s middle management appear to be directed to cut service provision by the reduction of permanent or suitable teachers until the service is so lacking nobody complains when they are closed down, I feel court houses will go the same way.
Court houses assist the most vulnerable in our community and to suggest the elderly, illiterate and unfortunate go online to print out application forms or ring call centres to seek legal advice falls well short of a ‘public service’.
