Yass Magpies U6 BLACK v Bungendore U6 ORANGE
The U6 Black team brushed off last week’s loss and went out firing on Mother’s Day against the Bungendore Tigers.
Cruz Dunley started the match with a big kickoff and instantly proved he was in for a big game. Cruz defended, hungry for the ball and chased the tigers with conviction. It was no different when the ball was tucked under his arm and the try line was in sight, scoring a lightning fast try for his team.
Toby Waters, already a future star, has only gotten stronger. His tackles were low and tough, and when running the ball he pushed through the row of defenders with a mighty force.
Zane Goode had a serious need for speed this week. No Tiger could outrun him, he would chase and launch himself around their ankles and not let go until they dropped. He put points on the board with a super-fast run, finding a gap in the defence to put the ball down over the try line in style.
Ashton Curtis, fresh off his first ever try last week was more determined than ever. He was right in the tackling game, working as a team to defend and also displayed he is capable of speed when the ball is passed to him and the wing is open, scoring a try after a full length run up the field.
Lachlan Kesby stopped the Tigers in their tracks, his acceleration no match, giving his all and running the Tigers down. And he didn’t stop there, the speed machine was just too good, scoring two cracking tries in the game.
Heath Wood had some huge hit ups, chewing up plenty of metres each time, once resulting in a full length try. And when defending it was no different, putting an end to the Tigers runs with quick, focused chases.
Billy Buser sat the first quarter off and when it was time to play, he didn’t muck around. His first touch of the ball resulted in a duck and weave quest for try line. He didn’t stop impressing the crowd all game, scoring a total of 4 tries for the magpies with his strong and fast legs.
Harry Donoghue showed courage with some big tackles, grabbing hold of the running Tigers and bringing them down by their shirts. He ran with confidence often into a wall of Tiger defence, as hard as he could. And his efforts paid off, scoring a superb try in the last quarter.
All the boys are developing and improving in leaps and bounds. A direct reflection of the dedication and patience of their amazing coach Beau and team manager Lisa, even giving the boys a tulip to give to their mums at the end of the game. Fantastic effort boys and happy Mother’s Day mums!
Final score: 44-24
Tries: Billy 4, Lachlan 2, Zane 1, Heath 1, Cruz 1, Ashton 1, Harry 1
Player of the week: Ashton Curtis
UNDER 6 WHITE
Sunday May 13 saw the Under 6 White take on the Bungendore Tigers Black with a cracking 36 – 20 win. Both sides played some phenomenal footy, with great running attack and some bone rattling tackles. Once again Trae Douven, Henry Gooley and Mark Davis led from the front with 2 tries each and some great cover defence. Izabella Blayden, Logan Gray and Troy Davis also had a day to remember with brilliant individual tries, to add to their strong defensive efforts.
Leading the way up front, Sam Masters and Reese Flynn provided some great hit ups and anyone would think they had been playing for years. Jackson Crisp also built on previous weeks performances with his best run of the season so far.
Our Player of the Week went to Izabella Blayden. Izabella had an outstanding game with her first try of the year coming from a length of the field run. Bella try’s her hardest week in week out and is always strong in defence and attack. She has proven herself a valuable asset to our team and we look forward to her continuing her great form.
UNDER 7 BLACK
The Under 7’s Black put in another solid team performance, and the stand out with 5 tries was Charlie Jamieson.
The boys won 36- 4 and with time running out until they take to the field without the coach with them they are showing how well they will handle having to make their own decisions which is very pleasing .
UNDER 8 WHITE V UNDER 8 BLACK
This week the U8 White team took on the U8 Black team, a battle they were all looking forward to. The White team didn’t come away with a win but they all enjoyed the game.
All the kids played very well attacking the other team’s line and defending theirs.
Angus scored our only try with a great run, one of many.
Player of the day was Isaac. I can’t think of a player who is more deserving. Isaac’s attack is inspiring and he’s given his all every week.
Everybody is looking forward to next week at Bungendore.
UNDER 9 BLACK
The Under 9 Black team took on a strong Bungendore Tigers Black team and were unlucky to come off on the wrong side of the 28 – 20 score line.
Jimmy Regan walked away with player of the day, making some strong runs and tackles and crossing the line for his first try playing league.
Sutherland Holliday was top of defence and also crossed the line for a sneaky short dive to score through the defence line and kicked a conversion.
Jack Jamieson was consistently strong in both attack and defence. The little guy with the big heart just does not stop and was unlucky to cross the tryline. He also kicked a conversion.
Logan Collins looks like he’s loving being back on the field this year and is playing some strong and consistent football.
William Hall had some moves at dummy half and made some good runs. Liam Beeten and Tyler Smith got in and gave it all a good hard crack too.
Thanks to George Foran, Lewis Jones and Jack Ryan for doubling up this week. And while we’re on doubles, Jack Ryan greatly assisted his Black team mates out scoring a double off the bench and kicking a conversion.
The team is facing off against some very strong teams each week and we are proud of their commitment and effort.
UNDER 9 WHITE
The Under 9 White took on a less drilled Bungendore White team and came out on top of the 44 – 20 score line notching up their first win of the season.
Jack Ryan all warmed up ran in another massive 4 tries and kicked a conversion. He was just too strong for the White’s defence line.
George Foran was also too strong and fast crossing the line for two tries. George’s strong and consistent play seen him come away with player of the day.
Brodie Poidevin Warden crossed the line for his first try of the season reminding everyone how much speed he keeps in those legs.
Alex Bell was consistent in attack and defence and converted two goals.
Lewis was the whites other converter for the day and is really learning his way around the footy field.
Brock Lenon showed his strength with some good solid runs and Fergus Green showed some great support to the team.
Jack Jamieson, William Hall and Logan Collins played the double today also backing up for the White.
Jack Jamieson demonstrated his never drop enthusiasm racking up some more runs and kicking a conversion. Logan Collins was like the energizer bunny and kicked up his play another notch to score a try and kick a conversion.
Congrats on your first win boys!
UNDER 10’S
This week the Under 10’s Magpies played at home against a well drilled Valley Dragons. The Magpies showed an impressive improvement in all areas of the game.
Sam Hewett was all over the field in defence and there were quite a few strong runs from Lochie Hossenloge and Will Mihaljavic. It was an extremely close game but our boys never gave up and came out on top with a 24 – 20 win!
Yass showed great enthusiasm and energy on the field and impressed everyone with their kicking skills. Tries to Will Mihaljavic, Max Buser and two to Jett McGrath. Goals to Will Mihaljavic, Max Buser, James Martens and Hugh Merriman.
Today’s stand out players were Will Mihaljavic, Jett McGrath, Lochie Hossenloge, Hugh Merriman,
Sam Hewett and Abbie Walls. Sam Hewett was awarded the Player of The Match.
Great work by all the Under 10’s
UNDER 11
The Under 11’s had another home game this weekend after the bye, coming up against Goulburn.
Jayda Danilczak started off the day’s point scoring frenzy at the beginning of the first half with Connor Shepherd making a successful conversion.
The points kept on coming with Joey Timmer and Kylan Ebert both running close to the length of the field and scoring tries, having Kyle Shoard and Baxter Sicily converting both attempts.
Oscar Sargent and Shaun Bell worked hard in the middle to keep Goulburn scoreless, leaving an 18- nil score at half time.
The second half seen Goulburn push hard down the field and scoring their first points of the game.
The Magpies worked hard with their outstanding goal line defence, holding Goulburn out for as long as they could before the opposition snuck back in, converting and taking the score to 18-12.
Some tough carries taken down the field allowed the magpies to lengthen their lead with Tom Jamieson adding more points and Joey jumping over for a double, finishing the day off with a 28-12 score line.
A hard fought win for the team helps carry confidence into their first away game of the season, this weekend against the Valley Dragons.
UNDER 12’S
The Under 12’s unfortunately came off on the wrong side of a 24 – 0 scoreline this week.
Good luck this weekend when you take on Gungahlin Bulls Red at Nicholls.
UNDER 13’s
The Under 13’s had a bye this weekend which is just what was needed after some tough team changes.
Good luck in your first game this weekend as an Under 13’s team when you take on Woden Weston Gold at North Curtin.
UNDER 16’S
The Bezzy’s Garden Service under 16’s took on the bitter cold Friday night game against the top of leader board team Goulburn Stockmen.
The Magpies being down on numbers were just out matched by this well drilled team taking a loss this week. The boys are making a good show of competing but the lack of reserves are reflecting badly on the scoreboard in the last 10 to 15 minutes of each half.
Highlights for the Magpies was Jack Hall having a blinder in defence, constantly rattling much larger ball runners in his best ever defensive display.
Aden Nasralla continues to shine in his overall game with his footwork at the line enabling him to make good metres, Kai Douven showing glimpses of his speed and agility and Tom Bell big work rate in attack.
UNDER 17 GIRLS
The Under 17 Magpies travelled to Rugby league Park in Braddon to tackle the West Belconnen Warriors with the game also significant as the Canberra Raiders were selecting a girls development squad from the full round of matches all being held at the one location.
Prior to kick off the girls were quite nervous with the distinct size advantage the Warriors had over the much smaller Magpies and this showed early in the game with the Warriors first set resulting in a converted try for a 6 – 0 lead.
West Belconnen had all of the early possession which resulted in their second try wide out for a 10 – 0 lead. With a little possession coming the way of the Magpies they put some pressure on the Warriors defence, however they just could not break the line.
After some near scoring opportunities with the ball the girls were under more pressure in defence as the Warriors went up another gear and with two tries they went to the break 18 – 0.
The Magpies retuned for the second half with a bit more confidence and were now putting pressure on the Warriors defence and this paid off with Gabbie Davis scoring under the post and the margin was reduced to 4 – 18.
This seemed to lift the girls as their defence improved and the warriors were having difficulty making any inroads into the Yass line.
The game started to swing the Magpies’ way and after some good lead up work through the middle Gabbie Davis was in again under the post and the score line was now 8 – 18.
The Magpies were now on top of the Warriors as they mounted more attacking raids and Ruby Sicily scored a good try wide out to reduce the margin to 12 – 18.
Unfortunately time was against the girls and they went down 12 – 18, however the team really did hang in after a slow start and should be proud of their efforts.
OPEN WOMENS
This week saw the Beck Tree Removals Open Women’s Tackle team take on Goulburn at Walker Park.
Our girls put in a strong performance against last year’s grand finalists with Jacinta Murphy and Mell Ings taking some impressive hit-ups.
Yass defended strongly, especially on their line when Goulburn had repeated sets. Yass coming out on top with a score of 30 - 14.
Eilish Winbank 3 tries, Hollie Massey 2 tries and 1 try to Gabby Suckling. 2 goals to Shannon Wright and 1 goal to Hollie Massey. Player of the match went to Ally Beck.
