It was a perfect Sunday morning for football and the U6 Black team were pumped and ready to put on a show.
Coach Beau worked hard at training with the boys to get back in defence after a tackle and this definitely paid off. All the boys really improved in this area.
Today we saw tackling machine Billy Buser work hard in defence, doing some amazing one on one tackles, as well as working with his team mates stopping the Bears from offloading their passes. Billy also made some speedy runs resulting in 3 tries!
Lachie “Lightning” Kesby played a great attacking and defending game. In attack he had only the tryline in his sights scoring an amazing four tries for the Magpies. He should also be commended for starting to read the game and knowing when and where to be next! In defence he held on with all his might to stop the Bears in their tracks.
Zane “Zippy” Goode played a great game dodging and weaving through the Bears defence and was unlucky not to cross the line. Zane was always eager and ready for his next run which was great to see.
Heath Wood was awarded Player of the Day today with his dominating runs. He made numerous breaks in attack, one time running the length of the field only to get tackled centimetres from the try line. Heath is improving every week, well done!
When Cruz Dunley spots a gap in the oppositions defence he is there! Running around and through the Bears defence to score another try this week! Cruz also made some good tackles helping his team out to slow the Bears down.
Coming off an amazing game last week Ashton Curtis took to the field ready to make the meters count, and that he did. Ashton made some great runs, unlucky not to cross the white line multiple times.
Harry “Freight Train” Donoghue is showing more and more confidence every week. His powerful runs were only slowed by a whole defensive team on his back. Well done Harry.
Final Score: Yass Magpies 32 - Bears 24
Tries: Lachlan Kesby 4, Billy Buser 3, Cruz Dunley 1
Player of the Week: Heath Wood
UNDER 6 WHITE
On Sunday May 20, the U6 Whites played the Gungahlin Bulls Yellow, with the game ending in a draw 36-36. It was the coldest morning so far, as usual the kids came ready to play and play they did! This week saw Travis Mann, Henry Gooley, Reece Flynn & Troy Davis using their skills with some great defence.
Izabella Blayden, Mark Davies, Sam Masters, Logan Gray and Jackson Crisp have great attacking skills which resulted in some near tries. They only missed as the field was a bit slippery. Our try scorers for the week were Troy Davis, Sam Masters, Travis Mann, Henry Gooley and Logan Gray.
Our Player of the day went to Travis Mann who played like a professional. This is Travis’ first season playing but he has all the skills which is evident when he hits that field. Travis had a phenomenal day on both attack and defence, he was there to support his team mates throughout the game.
UNDER 7 BLACK
The Under 7’s Black travelled to Kaleen to take on the Bears.
They continued their great form and come away winning by 52-24.
Sidney Luckie had a very strong game by topping the tackle count with 16 and scoring 2 tries.
Big cooper Downey scored a brilliant length of the field try.
Landon Glover and Oscar Walsh-Devoe didn’t take a backwards step and kept putting their hands up for more runs, the pair were unlucky not to score tries themselves.
This week’s player of the match was Jed Newman with 3 tries and with Harry “Hollywood” Waters made some terrific try saving tackles.
Charlie Jamieson and Jaiden Ings were at their usual best with strong defence and five tries between them.
Well done boys.
UNDER 7 WHITE
The Under 7 Whites travelled to Nicholls on Sunday to take on the Gungahlin Bulls Yellow. They were unlucky to go down 28-16. After conceding a few tries in the first half, Yass came out firing for the second half with the last quarter being the best teamwork displayed and the best footy they have played so far this year. They showed amazing spirit to put on some great runs and hard tackles to come back into the game. Tries went to Flynn, Darius and two to Beau. Sunday’s player of the match was Flynn with a try and some awesome defence. Keep up that spirit next week Under 7 Whites!
UNDER 8 WHITE
The U8 White team travelled to Bungendore this week. We didn’t get a win, but the team played fantastically well.
The team’s attack was outstanding with everyone doing hard, straight runs up the middle, something they have been working on.
Our defence was a great improvement too.
Dylan scored our only try with a great run up the middle, stepping a few players.
George received our player of the day for his running and defence. George was also first receiver in the second half and did a great job.
Looking forward to a great home game next week.
UNDER 9 BLACK
The Under 9 Black team took on a strong Woden Rams Blue team and were unlucky to go down in a hotly contested and enjoyable match to watch, 28 – 22.
Sutherland Holliday was a powerhouse on the day coming out well on top of the tackle count and forced his way through the line twice carrying half the team with him. It was too hard to see whether he’d been held up or not until the ref blew the whistle each time.
William Hall demonstrated again how much he loves getting in the dummy half bib with some great self-initiated darts to the right. The first resulting in a great try.
Lachie Brown on debut was strong in attack and showed us he has some speed as well scoring a great try as well.
Logan Collins showed consistent attack and defence which earned him the player of the day trophy, and he also kicked a conversion.
Jack Jamieson who was strong in attack and Liam Beeten also kicked conversions. Liam is really coming out of his shell this year and improves with every game.
Declan Cooke in his first game of the season showed he is fearless and ready to tackle the biggest boys on the team, even if it knocks him down.
Jimmy Regan also had the same fearless attitude and was good in both attack and defence.
Neve Luckie had a few good runs in her debut game also. I have no doubt she will gain more confidence with each game she plays.
Tyler Smith is another player starting to gain confidence making more runs each game. Great work Tyler.
I have no doubt your first win isn’t far away team. You fight hard and this makes us proud.
UNDER 9 WHITE
The Under 9 White team took on the Woden Rams in a very evenly matched game resulting in a 28 all draw.
Jed Glover in his first game with the team showed us that size is no barrier. His bright yellow headgear could be seen zipping around all over the field from one side to the other taking on anyone in his sight. He was only one tackle off the top count and kicked a conversion as well. His efforts earned him player of the game.
Jack Ryan was consistent as always making some solid runs and tackles. He crossed the line for two solid tries and kicked a conversion.
George Foran was also consistent as always with his zippiness also getting him across the line for two tries and kicking a conversion.
Angus Kelly was consistent and top of defence, had some great runs and also kicked a conversion. A great all round game.
Fergus Green was quick to offload but got in the game this week to support his team. Confidence will come for Fergus through his first season.
Brock Lenon made some great solid runs and tackles in a consistent effort this week. Brock has so much potential and I can’t wait for his confidence to catch up with his skills to back himself in.
Brodie Poidevin Warden was also consistent in both attack and defence this week. Some good quick runs were made but was unlucky not to get across the line.
Alex Bell continues to consistently play hard each week in both attack and defence.
Sutherland Holliday backed up this week for the double. He scored a try and made some great solid tackles.
Great effort team.
UNDER 10
This week the Under 10’s travelled to Canberra to take on Westies. The Magpies felt the cold conditions in a 34-26 loss. Magpies tried went to Lochie Hossenloge, Jett McGrath and two tries to Max Buser. Conversions were scored by Will Mihaljavic, Max Buser, Hugh Merriman and Cody Diamond. Player of the match went to Max Buser after a strong game. Better luck next week.
UNDER 11
The Under 11’s played against the Red Dragons last Sunday over at Gowrie.
After some close tussles last season Yass were expecting more of the same on the day.
Strong charges up the middle enabled Yass to dominate the ruck and the players constantly made plenty of metres to put the team into excellent field position which we capitalised into points at each occasion.
Hunter Stansfield has realised how big and strong he is and troubled the defence all day crossing for a try and skittling the Dragons all day. Hunter got the player of the match trophy on the day.
Oscar Sargent crossed for two tries of his own dominating the centre as he has since his return to the team this year.
Another big bruiser of the team Sean Bell was also not to miss out on the try scoring as he added to his tally for the year after a bustling run of his own.
Jayda Danilczak who has a perfect balanced running style combined of grace and power was to hard to handle to also register a try of her own and tackled well shutting down many raids with copybook defence.
Tom Jamison scored two tries from dummy half showing his great vision and strength as both times he was not wearing the pink bib but has a great knack of finishing.
Kyle Shoard was not to be out done and crossed also for a try and was picking and driving players with a great defensive display that was knocking the wind out of any Dragon players that ran his way.
Kylan Ebert was equally as effective as Kyle in the tackling department himself getting in and driving the Dragons backwards and onto their backs.
Connor Shepherds organizing was again prominent with him taking on the line and threading passes onto teammates into the gaps and made Yass lots of ground each play and Connor also topped the tackle count on the day.
Benson Smith and Trent Demczyszyn were more prominent with the ball and Louis Green contributed well in defence also.
This week Yass are at home from 11:30 to the Queanbeyan Roos who knocked Yass out of the semi-finals last year, so the game will be a good guide to where the team sits in this year’s competition.
UNDER 14
The Under 14’s team played away at Curtain last Sunday against Woden Weston.
We only had 13 players for the match, no reserves, and a couple of the boys hadn’t played for a couple of seasons. It was great to see Cam and Tom both back playing.
In the first 20 minutes of the match, the game was quite even with some great attack and defence from both teams.
The opposition scored a couple of tries and we then scored a couple to make for an exciting game ahead.
Our first try went to Lane, then our Rookie Connor went over for an awesome try in the corner. Well done to Connor on his first try.
We saw some great tackling from Damo, Cam, Timmy and Lucas. Well done to all these boys, especially Cam with 15 tackles in his first game back after a season or more off.
Late in the second half our boys just ran out of steam with no reserves, with the opposition scoring a few late tries.
A special mention needs to go to Tyson and Tom, who both had rippers of a games in defence. Well done boys.
In attack, Jasper was a stand out with some great hard runs, well done Jasper.
The end result was 32-8 to Woden Weston.
The boys played well and shouldn’t be disappointed in the effort shown.
UNDER 16
The Under 16’s travelled to Greenway to play against the Tuggerong Knights.
They ran on the field with 12 players, while teammates were missing due to injury and sickness. It was a huge effort to start with 12 then to lose their tower of strength in the forwards Tom Bell to injury, which left them to play the second half with only 11.
This week Yass improved their field position and with a better completion rate they found themselves attacking the Knights’ tryline more often. Joey Blyss capitalized on a great team set to score a great try and also converted two more tries.
While the Knights defended their line; Riley Timmer scooped up the ball from dummy half and took on the line of defenders, putting it over for another four pointer. Riley showed plenty of heart as he spent the entire second half sporting a huge shiner. Kai Douven also playing injured toughed out a good defensive display.
In spite of the Knights’ large bench and the rotating of fresh players the boys dug deep, with Jason Davis and Jarome McGrath displaying some heavy hitting defence. Aden Nasralla and Riley Bush were belting attackers and hurting defenders with their running. Ayden Pothan stepped up and took plenty of carries, Riley Bethune playing way above his weight with no hesitation, Monty Pearce showed encouraging signs in defence and Kane Dowling put his body on the line against the big forwards. It was a great team effort.
UNDER 17 GIRLS
The Magpies were on their third straight road trip as they tackled the Cooma Stallions.
The Magpies were under strength as they took the field and it looked like it might be a long day as the home side scored in their first set to lead 6 – 0.
The girls rallied together and their defence tightened up and Cooma were finding it difficult to penetrate the Magpies’ line.
The game flowed evenly for a while until Gabbie Davis split the Cooma defence for a try under the posts which she also converted and the scores were locked at 6 – 6.
Cooma regained the lead a short time later after mounting some pressure to lead 10 – 6. Not to be outdone, the Magpies applied their own pressure and a smart try by dummy half Teneal Atkinson and conversion by Gabbie Davis saw the Magpies lead 12 – 10 at the break.
The second half did not start well for the girls as a few errors and a number of penalties allowed the home side to apply lots of pressure on the Magpies, however some gritty defence held them at bay.
After surviving the attacking raids from Cooma the Magpies began controlling their possession and got back into their groove and were rewarded with back to back tries to Gabbie Davis and with a conversion of her own try the magpies flew out to a 22 – 10 lead.
Following a number of penalties for offside infringements by the Magpies, Cooma scored next to reduce the margin to 14 – 22.
As the clocked down to full time Geena Elliott scored a good try for a memorable 26 – 14 victory.
It was a really good effort by the entire Magpies team as they played the entire game one player down.
OPEN WOMENS
This week the Open Women’s Tackle team trekked to Greenway to take on the Tuggeranong Buffaloes.
Our ladies didn’t complete their sets early on which put them under pressure but they defended their line well. Yass began to control the football later in the first half, resulting in three tries.
The game was called off early in the second half due to an injury to one of the Buffaloes players.
The final score was Yass 16 - Buffaloes 0. Vic Alley scored two tries and Sam Poidevin scored one try.
One goal went to each Shan Wright and Hollie Massey. The player of the match was Jess Howard.
A big thank you to Sam Poidevin and Gabby Davis for stepping up to help out the team. Lastly, wishing Hollie and Alley a great time on their trip!
