“Our Grants Program is a wonderful way for Council to provide financial assistance to our community groups and organisations,” Yass Valley Mayor Rowena Abbey said.
“St Peter’s Anglican Church in Sutton, Yass Valley Men’s Shed, and the Gundaroo and District Historical Society are just some of the previous community groups and events that we have been able to support.”
Yass Valley Council’s Grants Program is divided into two categories – Community Grants and Heritage Grants.
The Community Grants aim to encourage the implementation of projects that enhance existing, or develop new, services and activities that:
- Maximise access and usage of community resources, services and facilities.
- Encourage the development of, and broad community participation in, community services, cultural activities and environmental initiatives.
- Encourage environmental sustainability
- Encourage inclusiveness, collaboration, capacity building, equity and social justice.
The Heritage Grants aim to assist owners, property managers and community groups to undertake projects that:
- Foster positive community attitudes towards heritage and conservation.
- Maintenance projects to structures of historical value to ensure their long-term conservation.
St Peter’s Anglican Church at Sutton was the successful recipient of two Yass Valley Council grants in last year’s round, which resulted in a makeover of the church – inside and out.
A Community Grant of $8360 enabled the construction of a new portico and disabled ramps at the front of the church while a Heritage Grant of $2000 provided for restoration painting inside the building.
Dr Robyn Hardy said the grants helped breathe new life into St Peter's Church.
“With the help of these grants, and funds raised by the congregation, the church has had a full makeover and now looks wonderful,” Dr Hardy said.
“This project has protected the heritage value of this old building and enhanced its sustainability to people of all ages. Many passers-by have expressed their delight at how well the old church now looks”.
A change in the grants program this year has resulted in a separate Seasonal Major Event Marketing Program, developed to ensure a holistic approach to marketing of events within the Yass Valley for the benefit of the community and the visitor.
Council is seeking public comments on the draft program, which has been on public exhibition since the beginning of the month, with submissions closing at 5pm on Monday, May 28, 2018.
