2018 marks the tenth anniversary of the Roos’ first premiership win, in 2008 over Gungahlin.
Since then, the Roos have been a dominant force in the competition, making the final multiple times and winning it in 2017.
The start of 2018 has been a similar story, and six rounds in the Roos remain undefeated and at the top of the ladder.
The Reunion Ball, explained club secretary Jenene Forlonge, seemed obligatory once the players began talking about it and realised that it was already the tenth anniversary.
“Just talk, and that it was ten years and why not try and get those guys back together again for a ‘remember when’,” Forlonge said.
“A lot of them [the former players] are confirmed, so still waiting on a few but it’s hard to get footballers to commit to much I’ve decided.”
Players from the 2008 team are coming from as far as Tasmania in order to attend the reunion, which is open to any and all current or former Roos members.
The day will begin with the Roos’ match against ANU at Joe O’Connor Park. It will be an exciting clash between the top-ranked Yass side and ANU who are ranked fourth and pose a threat to any of the top three.
However, the highlight of the day will come several hours later, when the Reunion Ball kicks off at around 6:00pm at the Golf Club.
“It really is just an excuse to get dressed up and relax and have a listen to all these old stories,” Forlonge said.
“We did have a couple of those 2008 players that played in last year’s grand final as well, so it’ll be a good time for them to kick back and have a bit of a yarn with the others.”
The last 12 months have seen many changes take place throughout the team, and Forlonge estimated that roughly 50% of the players on the field this year are new recruits.
Similarly, she could only recall one player who is still with the Roos from the 2008 side: Dave Willersdorf.
“Dave’s unable to play because he’s recovering from an ACL injury that he did in the 2017 grand final,” Forlonge said.
“But he’s certainly still around it and amongst it, and he’s at training nearly every Tuesday and Thursday, and he makes it to most games.”
The reunion will be emceed by Dave O’Brien, another former player of the Roos.
Tickets are $75 dollars each, and there will be a three course meal and entertainment provided. RSVP’s are required by Friday June 15, to Jenene Forlonge on 0417891955.
