They’ll do it in the sunshine or the rain, but on Sunday the Under 6 Black team fronted up to play footy in a sea of thick fog - and as always, were enthusiastic as ever.
Heath Wood started the match with a monster kick off to the Bulls half and was instantly in tackle mode. Heath had some tremendous hit ups, always showcasing his speed and looking for a gap.
Billy Buser had his inner super hero gauge turned up full boar. He tackled with the strength of hulk and ran the ball to the try line like the Flash, crossing the chalk in style, a massive five times.
Ashton Curtis had his eye tuned in and took off from the defence line like a missile after a target. He had some big hit ups and copped some colossal tackles but his persistence paid off, scoring two fantastic tries from the wing.
Getting past Lachy Kesby was like hitting a brick wall for the Bulls, once he set hit sights on the ball he was after it with the ambition of a magpie in swooping season. Lachy scored twice for his team, both times launching himself with his trademark dive to put the ball down.
Zane Goode had some tough runs, speeding towards the line with a fire in his belly. The defence was tough and he copped some hard tackles, but the resilience shown by getting straight up, playing the ball and trying again was very inspiring - and worth the effort, scoring a super duper try.
Cruz Dunley was focussed, knuckling down and giving it his all the whole game. And with legs that go as fast as the road runner, it was only a matter of time before he saw some space and put the foot down, to score a spectacular in the corner.
Hurricane Harry Donoghue wasn’t running on all cylinders this week but he showed great courage to soldier on when his team needed him. Harry did a jumbo kick off to start the third and had some solid hit ups when it was his turn to run the ball.
The mums and dads were frozen by the full time bell but the boys didn’t seem to notice the cold, high on endorphins from yet another amazing game. Great work Magpies!
Final score: 44-36
Tries: Billy 5, Lachlan 2, Ashton 2, Zane 1, Cruz 1
Player of the day: Billy Buser
UNDER 6 WHITE
Sunday the July 1 saw the U6 Whites take on the Gungahlin Bulls White at a foggy Walker Park.
Our little Magpies knew they were in for a tough day at the office with some bone rattling defence from the Bulls side right from the get go. All the kids showed how tough they are and displayed great team work and a never give up attitude to go down 24 – 40.
Henry Gooley and Travis Mann showed their attacking flair scoring five of the team’s six tries. They both backed this up in defence with some strong tackling and great cover defence.
Both Troy Davis and Sam Masters led many of the sets with strong carries, displaying their strong fends and determination in trying to get the team going forward.
Some quick play the balls allowed Izabella Blayden and Logan Gray to make some great metres up the middle, with one run resulting in a try for Izabella.
Both were solid in defence and helped one of defensive leaders, Reese Flynn, continue her great aggressive defensive style which put the Bulls on the back foot on many occasions.
Reese and Mark Davis had some great attacking runs against a strong defensive Bulls with Mark slowly getting back to his best.
Jackson Crisp struggled to get warm in the cold conditions and we hope he can spend more time on the field next week.
Our player of the week was Izabella Blayden. Izabella over the last three weeks has been a workhorse in attack and defence. This week she showed great determination and toughness in her best game of the year.
Once again all the kids should be so proud of how well they played and we look forward to seeing you play next week against the Rams.
UNDER 7 BLACK
The Under 7 Black side took on yet another bulls team in what was another evenly matched game and the full time score was exactly that a 28-28 draw.
But the day belong to big Cooper Downey having the game of his life from making try saving tackles to a length of the field try to draw the match even finding time to entertain the large crowd between plays!
Charlie Jamieson, Sid Luckie and Harry “Hollywood” Waters also scored tries.
Jed Newman, Jaiden Ings and Noah hall were very effective in defence while Landon Glover made plenty of metres up the middle.
The boys continue to improve each week which is great to see, as it is very evident just how much these boys love the game they play.
UNDER 9 BLACK
The Under 9 Black team gained a convincing win over the Belconnen United Sharks on Sunday with a 40 – 26 score line.
Jimmy Regan opened the scoring with the first of a hat trick of tries. Jimmy was always equal top of defence for the day. Great effort by Jimmy.
Next to score was Liam Beeten. Liam broke through the defence and had a good run down the side to get across the line. Always love seeing the happiness footy brings Liam, especially when he scores.
Liam went on to convert a goal later in the game as well and put in some good solid tackles.
Jack Jamieson was next in for the Magpies. Jack also equal topped the tackle count. It was great to see him back to his normal energetic and nonstop self. It was so great of an effort that he took away Player of the Day.
Logan Collins then crossed for the first of his two tries for the game. Logan has excelled after a year off last year and seems to get better with each game. Logan also converted a goal and put in a good defensive effort.
The last try scorer for the day was Sutherland Holliday, busting through the defence from the tap off at half way and making it to the line. Sutherland was also consistent in defence and converted a goal as well.
Lewis Jones was the other goal converter on the day. It’s really great to see Lewis starting to gain some confidence and getting right into the game.
Lachlan Brown, Declan Cooke and William Hall were all consistent in both attack and defence and supported the team well.
Thanks to Lewis and George Foran for backing up for the Black before your game. Well done team. A great effort for the day.
UNDER 9 WHITE
The Under 9 White team also came away with a convincing win in an almost identical score line making it 40 – 28 over the Tuggeranong Buffaloes.
Jack Ryan, strong and consistent in both attack and defence was first to cross the line for the day in what ended up a hat trick for Jack. He also converted his goal.
Jed “wow he’s quick” Glover was the next to cross the line in a great display of his speed up the sideline. It was the first of two for Jeddy who also put in a great defensive effort.
Sutherland Holliday backing up for the White was the next across the line in a re-run from the first game with a solid run brushing off the defence from the half way tap restart.
George Foran giving his all for his team was next across the line for his first of two. George also put in a consistent defence effort.
Angus Kelly was top of defence which is not uncommon. He can always be seen all over the field and today he kicked a conversion as well. Angus took away Player of the Day for his efforts.
Brock Lenon was excited that he kicked a conversion today. It was great to see him get some points on the board. Brock turns up and tries hard every game week in and week out for his team.
Jack Jamieson also backing up for the White was the final goal converter for the day.
Fergus Green was right in the mix today and is really starting to grow in confidence. There is nothing more rewarding than starting to see your new players grow in confidence. Keep it up Fergus.
Brodie Warden Poidevin had a cracking game in defence and came back to play a great second half at the dummy half position after a hit to the wrist in the first.
Lewis Jones was consistent in both attack and defence and played really hard in his second game for the day.
Great work team. You all make us proud.
UNDER 11
The Under 11’s played the Knights last Sunday at home.
Captain Jayda Danilczak led out the team and once again led from the front with her now trademark defence being again a highlight and she was also able to cross for try this week too.
Oscar Sargent topped the tackle count in his best display in the defence department this season and he once again was damaging in attack being hard to bring down.
Kylan Ebert plays way above his weight with hard hits and even harder running that resulted in a great running try showing good speed and evasion.
Will Downey relishing the full back roll saved tries and scored one himself and is continually improving every week to becoming a dangerous ball runner for the team.
In an attempt to get Baxter Sicily more involved he was thrusted into dummy half for the second half and proceeded to score three tries in the half alone not to mention some great tackling not to mention also kicking a goal to dominate the Knights in his time on the park.
Hunter Stansfield ran hard this week and if he continues to do so will become an unstoppable force which the team will benefit from, and he also converted a goal.
Connor Shepherd showed his uncanny ability to find the try line and led the team well with his organising ability and he was also able to kick a goal again this week.
Kyle Shoard tackled like a demon this week and also had his forwards running onto the ball well and he was able to also convert a goal as was Tom Jamison who also had his kicking boots on to also chime in to kick a goal of his own.
Josh Inkster and Louis Green both had there best running games this week both making good metres up the middle, Louis going so well he collected the Player of the Match trophy for the week, well done mate.
Yass play the Blues this Sunday in their last game for four weeks so they are hoping for a good result to head into the extended break.
UNDER 13
The Under 13’s team played at home last Sunday against a very fast Valley Dragons outfit.
It was a very frosty and foggy start to the day but the boys were keen for a strong game.
Some hard strong running early in first half, and some great defence set us up for a great game.
Mid way through the first half we seen our speedster Timmy race over towards the far left corner for a well-deserved try.
Not long after the opposition hit back with a try under the posts, with the try being converted.
We went into the break trailing 6-4.
In the second half we started off well with some great attack and defence.
However some frustration lead to some ill-discipline, and we let the Dragons in for another try. At one stage we were only playing with 10 players due to injury, sin binning and a send-off.
The boys that remained on the field really stood up and defended great and should be really happy with their efforts.
Throughout the game there was some very impressive line breaks from our captain Lane, and also from Lachlan out wider.
Lachlan topped the tackle count with 21 tackles, what a massive effort deserving lots of congratulations.
Luke Davis and Jasper were not far behind on 13 each.
Our Man of the Match went to an injured Timmy, who always gives 120% in every game.
In attack, there was some great plays and kicks put on by our first receiver Lucas, who is playing a key role in the team, well done Lucas. Coby made a few quality breaks from dummy half, showing everyone is stepping is improving.
The end result was Yass going down 10-4.
We definitely missed our tackling machine Tyson Harrison today. Hope Tyson is on the mend.
Also, we didn’t get to complete a write up the previous week when we played away at the Queanbeyan Kangaroos. In this game which we won 44 to 6, a big congratulations to Joe for another two tries, taking his tally to three in two weeks, and to Tyson for equal top tackler. Lane also scored three tries and equal topped the tackle count. Well done Lane that was a big effort. Damon, Luke, Jasper, and Lucas also scored tries. Goals also went to Lane, Lucas and Coby.
