Just last year, the community service club Lions International marked a centenary since its establishment in the US city of Chicago in June 1917. So it’s impressive to note that in 2019, the Lions Club of Yass will mark its 60th changeover dinner, having charted decades of local community service. Their club motto is “Ordinary people doing extraordinary things,” whether community greening, fundraising for worthwhile causes, or supporting people.

This year, the 59th changeover dinner asked Lions zone president Margaret McPherson to officiate the new board roles, with Stan Luff as club president. The special dinner was held at the Yass Soldiers Club on Thursday July 5, with two courses, then an engaging talk by guest speaker Tracey Beadman. Ms Beadman has recently returned from a pilgrimage along the Camino de Santiago, walking some 890 kilometres while raising money for Maya’s Rest. The club donated $500 to Ms Beadman’s fundraiser. The club estimates it has donated about $750,000 to Yass Valley causes over its six decades.
