There are undoubtedly some fine traditions of moral behaviour from the early 1900’s still in place today.

But many of the ideas are outdated and not relevant for a today’s society.
You may be surprised to know that one thing still in place in NSW is that abortions were illegal in 1900 and they are still illegal today (except under special circumstances), based on the same code.
Incredibly, unlawfully procuring an abortion is punishable by up to 10 years' imprisonment.
We may be the last Australian state to uphold this antiquated stance, given that Queensland will introduce laws to decriminalise abortion in August.
Greens NSW MP and Spokesperson for the Status of Women, Dr Mehreen Faruqi MLC, introduced the first abortion decriminalisation bill in NSW’s history in March 2017.
This was defeated in the Legislative Council.
She has again called on the NSW Government to decriminalise abortion in response to the Queensland move towards decriminalisation, or risk being the last state in Australia to reform archaic abortion laws.
The majority of Australians support laws allowing women to access safe and legal abortions.
Even against overwhelming public opinion, the NSW Liberal-National Government is willing to use this blunt instrument that turns women into criminals and brings stigma, shame and discrimination.
Thank goodness we have Greens MPs like Mehreen who are not beholden to the far right conservatives. Let’s hope she can drag NSW into the 21st century and protect the most basic right of women to have control over their own bodies.
