‘Ask for Angela’ is an internationally recognised safety campaign to prevent violence and anti-social behaviour.
The campaign has already been trialled in Wagga Wagga, Albury, Orange and Byron Bay. The original idea was created in Lincolnshire, England in 2016. NSW Police Force hope it will reduce incidents of sexual assaults and harassment, many of them alcohol related.
The idea of the campaign is for any patron of a licensed premises who is feeling unsafe to approach a staff member of the premises and ‘ask to see Angela’.
This code of ‘Asking for Angela’ will alert the staff member to discretely escort the person to safety.
This campaign has real value in the current climate of ‘dating apps’ where people are meeting someone at a bar or pub for the first time, having never met the other person beyond their mobile phone or computer. It is hoped it will assist those people who find themselves in an uncomfortable situation.
Asking for 'Angela’ will alert the staff member to discretely escort the person to safety.
NSW Police Force would also like to remind readers that if they feel in immediate danger or need urgent help they should call 000.
