They started the game into a strong headwind and Grammar spent the first 15 minutes camped in Yass’s defensive half.
Redbacks defenders Gus, Hunter,Tate and Caleb did a magnificent job of keeping out Grammar’s talented forwards, the pressure kept building which lead to a bullet shot on goal from outside the box which superstar keeper Charles spectacularly tipped it over the bar.
This was a turning point in the game. Yass’s confidence grew and its midfield of Jake and Albie started to make some damaging runs through the center.
Some great clearing balls from Caleb and Harrison lead to some promising attacking raids.
Oscar scored the first goal with a brilliant shot from out wide and into wind. Jackson continued his goal scoring run with a punishing goal of his trusty left foot making it 2-0 at half time.
The second half saw an even affair with some dashing runs from Charlie and Cameron with Taylor and Alex working hard up front which lead to a great individual goal by Cameron.
The defenders were outstanding on the day, only conceding a late goal which was a great effort considering the quality opposition.
Final score was a 3-1 win which put Yass on top of the ladder. The match was played in good spirits and out team was spurred on by some enthusiastic cheering from the sideline.
Under 10
It was an absolutely superb effort by the Under 10 Redbacks against Marist on Saturday with four players not being able to make it.
Every single team member played out of their skins and put in 110% all game. Even with no substitutes you played for each other and covered plenty of ground.
What won Yass the game was the pressure that was constantly applied to the opposition to stifle their ball movement, and the huge effort to get back and defend when needed.
There was not one standout player, but a standout team today. The coach couldn’t be any prouder of the team effort. The Players’ Player this week is Lachy.
Meanwhile, in the senior soccer, the Yass Redbacks State League Division Three side further consolidated their position atop the ladder with their most recent victory over ANU on Saturday.
This win makes the Redbacks firm favourites going into finals, and makes their position in the number one spot unassailable ahead of the final round of the season, which is this coming Saturday on August 11, in which the Redbacks will play the Brindabella Blues.
Meanwhile, the Yass Redbacks State League Division Seven side secured a solid 3-3 draw against the sixth-ranked Belwest Foxes White on Saturday. They will take on third-placed Belwest Foxes Red this weekend to round out their season.
In the Men’s State League Eighth Division, the Redbacks drew with Brindabella last weekend and will play Weston Molonglo next.
Meanwhile, the Women's State League Division Five side continued their dominant form with a 3-0 win over the Belwest Foxes on Saturday, and will be looking to their match with Gungahlin United this weekend.
