The memorial bench is the first project to be completed with funds raised from the successful and entertaining Best Foot Forward auction held in 2016. The event was Yass community’s chance to remember and say thank you to Nelson.
The name of the auction reflected Nelson's favourite footwear – Dunlop Volleys! Nelson's art was generous and while he joked about becoming rich and famous, this aim was less important to him.
His passion was bringing art to the local community and supporting, promoting, mentoring and creating opportunities for other artists, particularly young artists and musicians.
Some of the funds from the auction have also been used to create a scholarship for young artists in Nelson's name and have been donated to UNICEF, a charity close to his heart.
The bespoke bench is being installed at Riverbank Park and will be unveiled at 1pm on August 12. A tree will also be planted to protect future users of the bench from the weather. Its west-facing aspect will be a perfect place to sit and watch the brilliant sunsets that Nelson, master of light, loved to paint.
You are invited to come along, join with friends and rest and reflect on Nelson’s gifts to this community. Another exciting community project is in the planning stages – stay tuned!
