The site is adjacent to Yass District Hospital and will take over the derelict Sheehan House, originally the nurses quarters.
The current ambulance station is located further down Meehan St, in a building over 60 years old, in between Yass Soldiers Club and Yass Fire Station.
Yass Ambulance Station Officer Paul Box said that while the current station is fine, a newer facility could better accommodate the bigger ambulances and more modern technology that’s been acquired.
The new ambulance station will be much bigger than the current and include the following:
- Internal parking for up to four emergency ambulance vehicles
- Multipurpose meeting/training room
- Logistics and storage areas
- Relief accommodation
- Staff parking
- Deliveries and loading bay
Construction is expected to finish at the end of 2019 and the crew will move up there shortly after.
Member for Goulburn Pru Goward, Yass Valley Mayor Rowena Abbey, Yass Ambulance Station paramedics and Southern NSW Local Health District were all in attendance.
The new site is part of a $122m program to redevelop 31 ambulances stations in NSW.
Ms Goward said, “It’s a very important investment, particularly in regional NSW where paramedics do a very important retrieval job; [they] spend hours on the roads, often in very difficult conditions. So, it’s important we have the right support here and, as I’m sure the Mayor would confirm, in a rapidly growing community, where I believe this will be very well used and enjoyed.”
