Unfortunately, the young Rams were unable to stave off Queanbeyan in a gripping encounter that went right down to the wire.
Spectators were amazed at the speed and intensity of play that the match featured, it was quickly forgotten that these players are only nine years old.
Despite being a match dominated by attack, the defensive work of the Rams cannot be underestimated.
There was some excellent cleaning out all day, with Declan and Jack Shannon constantly keeping the ruck clean, which then enabled Digby to send the ball out wide.
With the Queanbeyan defence tied up, Jack Kelly, Samuel, Brody (twice), and Tray were all able to get through and score.
Simon, Harry, and Katelyn were all constantly at Queanbeyan, getting in their faces or securing the ball. At the oranges and reflective of the game saw Yass even with Queanbeyan at 25-25.
The second half started with Queanbeyan getting their noses in front by scoring from the kick off.
Yass weren’t deterred though, with Samuel taking a quick to run half the field to score his second try.
Lachie chimed in and managed to grab two more tries, however Yass were unable to get away from Queanbeyan who managed to stay within one try. Angus Kelly also managed to cross the chalk, however Queanbeyan who stuck with Yass the whole game were able to grab two late tries to get away with the game 60 points to 50.
While the young team was disappointed with the result, the club is extremely proud of the way the young players held their own.
The never say die attitude of this team should see them continually be a threat to any competition that they are in. Congratulations to both teams on an exciting final.
The Under 9’s were the only side to make it to the Grand Final, after the Under 11’s were felled in the semi-finals by the Tuggeranong Vikings, in what was described by the match report as “one of the most epic games ever seen in the history of junior rugby”.
This brings to an end another successful season of junior rugby for the Yass Rams, whose players all showed great development, both in their skills and in their rugby IQ.
We look forward to seeing all the players again at our presentation day to be held on the September 22 at St Clement’s Hall.
The event kicks off at 9am, so come along and help celebrate the kids achievements in 2018.
