I was impressed by the local response to Threatened Species Day (September 7), which commemorates the day, in 1936, the last Tasmanian tiger died and that precious species became extinct.
The anniversary is an opportunity to raise awareness on the plight of some of our local threatened species and highlight the amazing work that Landcare, schools and the community are doing to prevent more plants and animals sliding into extinction.
Early in the month we launched the ‘Saving our Superb Parrot’ program, which involves a collaboration of Landcare, community groups and government organisations coming together to secure a future for our well-loved superb parrot across the southern tablelands.
Awareness-raising events including sweet creations for the Threatened Species Bake-off and a schools art competition, with some beautiful art works showing a deep understanding and unique perspectives on the plight of some of our endangered species.
Other highlights to look out for this month include an art exhibition by Freedom Wilson – who partnered with Saving our Species project manager, Anna Murphy, studying the local buttercup doubletail orchid (Diuris aequalis) – and kite making for the glossy black cockatoos for the Marulan Kite Festival.
