The lessons won’t cost a cent and aim to help people living in regional communities get around and get employed with a licence.
Visit Brett Naden at the Onerwal Local Aboriginal Land Council at 11 Adele Street, Yass on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday or call 0427 300 606.
Birrang, meaning horizon, is a charity from Orange, set-up originally to help Aboriginal people of NSW and now people of other cultures and backgrounds with employment and related services.
It’s a Roads and Maritime Services recognised Driving School and has four driving instructors.
One of those is Brett Naden, who will be based at the Onerwal Local Aboriginal Land Council at 11 Adele Street, Yass on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday for the next five weeks. He can also be contacted on 0427 300 606.
All Indigenous people and anyone with a Health Care or Pensioner Concession Card can visit Mr Naden at the Land Council on those days for lessons.
Naden was previously a driving test examiner with the RTA, so knows all about the road rules and practical driving lessons needed to pass. He said he is used to meeting people that already have some driving experience and can help to prepare those people for their test.
“As long as [people] come along and give me their time, I’ll hopefully get them their licence,” he said. “We don’t just help people get their licence either, we help them to drive safely.”
The company has just finished teaching around 120 people in Moree and 80 in Dubbo, according to Naden.
Naden said they will help as many people as they can.
