Yass Police Inspector Alison Brennan said, “With the long weekend coming up, traffic always becomes an increased focus for people on the way to and way back from holidays.

Police are particularly urging people to be aware of driver fatigue; to know their distance from other cars; and not to use their mobile phone while driving.
Harsher penalties were recently introduced for people found using their mobile phone while driving.
Demerit points for mobile phone usage while driving has gone up to five points and a ticket will now cost $347. Learner and P1 drivers will lose their licence on the spot, while P2 drivers will be left with only three demerit points.

A report released by NRMA this month called Can’t Talk. Driving., found 41 per cent of people involved in serious casualty crashes between 2008 and 2016, where a hand-held mobile phone was a contributing factor, were aged 25 or under.
