A number of players, members, and fans came along to greet the new coach, who recently concluded his tenure with the Bungendore Tigers.
Hardy will join his son Josh at the club, who coached the dominant Yass Magpies Katrina Fanning Shield side to a grand final berth in 2018.
The club will be looking to continue improving in 2019. Its 2018 season began well, and the first grade side looked assured of a top four finish after 11 rounds, when it boasted seven wins and only three losses.
However, a poor second half of the year saw the Magpies struggle to maintain their momentum and they slipped to finish at fifth, only narrowly missing out on a finals berth.
Hardy’s recruitment will bring a wealth of experience to the side, as he has coached both the Woden Rams and the West Belconnen Warriors in the Canberra Raiders Cup, and was an assistant coach at the latter when they won the 2004 premiership.
When Hardy’s tenure was first announced, Magpies president Greg Smith said that the club was “building on what the Naughtons did two-three years ago and then what Jarrad Teka’s continued on in 2018.”
Hardy himself commented that he was looking forward to working with the Magpies in 2019, when they will look to replicate their 2017 success with another finals finish.
