The Binalong-based artist was the project leader and mentor for the Alanya project.
Created in the remote WA community of Warburton, Alanya – new Ngaanyatjarra slang for “looking good” – is a bold expression of contemporary Ngaanyatjarra culture, created by young adults.
Alanya is the result of two years’ work and workshops at Wilurarra Creative in digital design, photography, fashion, styling, marketing, advertising, messaging, writing and translation. More than 90 collaborators – artists, volunteers, facilitators, photographers, writers, editors, models, stylists – have contributed to this extraordinary book to co-create fashion photo stories, digital collages, or original Ngaanyatjarra ads.
Kate holds an Honours degree in Visual Communication from UTS and over 20 years’ experience in the field. Her art has featured in multiple group shows; Brand X galleries in Sydney hosted her solo exhibition in 2016.
“[I am] driven by new ideas, in communication and the arts,” Kate said.
Her art presents with a pop aesthetic, however is layered and deeply expressive. Playful truisms, shifted perspectives, comedy and empathy are perennial in her unique vernacular.
The artist uses a bold, expressive colourful, poetic language, which aims to challenge the way we look at, and talk about, insights in our human condition.
Hear Kate O’Connor talk about the Alanya Project on Tuesday November 20, Binalong Hotel lounge at 8pm. Her talk follows the Binalong Arts Group Inc meeting that begins at 7.30pm.
