Of the 19 crashes, eight involved injuries, according to Roads and Maritime Services.
Improvements will include widening the road, improving rough sections of the road surface, upgrading signs, improving drainage, installing guard rails and removing vegetation.
Major work started last week and is expected to finish by May 2019, weather permitting.
Work will be carried out between 7am and 6pm on weekdays and 8am and 1pm on Saturday.
For the safety of motorists and workers, traffic control and a reduced speed limit of 40 km/h will be in place.
The $5.2 million work has been funded by the NSW government.
“The Lachlan Valley Way is a key commuter route, linking South West NSW with the Hume Highway and Canberra,” Member for Goulburn Pru Goward said.
“This project is part of an ongoing program of safety improvements on Lachlan Valley Way to provide safer and more consistent travelling conditions,” Ms Goward said.
