Every year, a number of prominent athletes from the Yass Valley region are on the basis of their achievements over the last 12 months, and nominations can be based on local, state, or national performances.
In 2019, the Yass Valley Council will recognise winners in five categories:
- Sportsperson of the Year – Open (for outstanding performances at a state level or above, including all territories).
- Sportsperson of the Year – Local (for outstanding performances at a regional or local level).
- Sportsperson of the Year – Junior (for outstanding performances by a person 18 years or younger as of December 31 2016).
- Clubperson of the Year (for person/s who have made a significant contribution to their sporting club).
- Team of the Year (for teams that have performed well at local level or higher).
This year, along with the Sports Awards, the council will also take nominations for entrants to the local Sporting Hall of Fame.
The Hall of Fame recognises locals whose achievements have been achieved “at an elite level in the sport(s) in which they have participated or served,” according to the nomination form.
Similarly, athletes who are nominated must have been retired from elite competition for at least two years, contributed to the development of the sport in the Yass District, have the support of their local, state, or national sporting association, and consistently display a standard of behaviour which is “fair, ethical, and above reproach.”
All of the above requirements must be met an athlete is to be successfully nominated.
There is also a Local Legend option available which offers long-serving administrators and officials the opportunity of recognition, with many similar requirements to those of the Hall of Fame nominees.
The most recent inductee to the Sporting Hall of Fame was Glenys Catlin-Gorman in 2017 for her achievements with the Yass Pistol Club, while Terry Scorgie and Warwick Stansfield were named Local Legends for their roles within motor racing and the Yass Car Club respectively.
